The role will involve a combination of electrical and mechanical fault finding, warranty repairs, modifications, functional testing and technical investigations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Rolling Stock Technician or Engineer looking for a circa two-year contract assignment working on a modern fleet of tram-train vehicles.

You will be responsible for:
  • Carrying out electrical and/or mechanical warranty repairs on Class 398 vehicles.
  • Diagnosing faults and identifying root causes across a range of train systems.
  • Completing hardware modifications and modification campaigns across the fleet.
  • Undertaking functional testing and sign-off following repairs and modifications.
  • Working across systems including high and low voltage, TCMS, propulsion, doors, brakes, bogies and vehicle body systems.
  • Reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
  • Investigating repeat failures and supporting the resolution of more complex technical issues.
  • Supporting condition monitoring and performance investigations.
  • Recording completed work, materials and technical findings accurately within the asset management system.
  • Producing clear technical reports covering defects, repairs and investigations.
  • Supporting warranty claims and post-incident investigations where required.
  • Ensuring removed components are correctly recorded and returned for repair, overhaul or investigation.
  • Assisting with materials management, stock control and preparing component kits for upcoming modifications.
  • Liaising closely with commissioning, production, engineering and depot teams.
  • Working in accordance with all relevant safety, quality and environmental procedures.
What we're looking for
  • A recognised electrical, electronic or mechanical engineering apprenticeship/qualification, ideally to NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC or equivalent.
  • Strong practical experience within rolling stock maintenance, commissioning, warranty or fleet modification.
  • Experience working on trains, trams, tram-trains or similar rail vehicles.
  • Strong electrical and/or mechanical fault-finding skills.
  • The ability to confidently read electrical or mechanical schematics and drawings.
  • Experience investigating technical faults and identifying root causes.
  • A good understanding of safe systems of work within a maintenance or production environment.
  • Experience completing technical documentation and maintenance records.
  • Basic IT competency, including Microsoft Office and electronic maintenance/asset management systems.
  • A practical, hands-on approach with the ability to work effectively as part of a technical team.
Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
  • Stadler Citylink or similar tram/light rail vehicles.
  • New fleet introduction or commissioning.
  • Rolling stock warranty support.
  • Fleet modification programmes.
  • TCMS and vehicle control systems.
  • Train propulsion, braking and door systems.
  • High and low voltage electrical systems.
  • Stock and materials control.
  • Preparing component kits for modification campaigns.
  • Post-modification functional testing.
  • Technical investigations and root cause analysis.
