Role Summary
The Senior Product Development Engineer will join our Golf Ball Research & Development Team in Carlsbad, CA, driving innovation of next‑generation golf ball technologies and high‑performance designs. This role encompasses the full product lifecycle from concept and R&D through production and continuous improvement, requiring collaboration across dynamic, cross‑functional teams.
Responsibilities- Lead golf‑ball product design by researching areas such as ball performance, fundamental understanding, materials, ball construction, aerodynamics, new equipment development, and consumer engagement.
- Study structure‑property‑processing relationships by fabricating, testing, and analyzing new golf‑ball formulations using R&D prototyping equipment.
- Lead golf‑ball projects from start to finish.
- Organize project decks and update team members on key findings and milestones.
- Act as a technical liaison to prototyping and testing teams in the characterization, optimization, and troubleshooting of golf‑ball fabrication processes, including rubber mixing, compression molding, injection molding, surface prep, and paint application.
- Provide technical input and guidance in the development and implementation of new testing techniques and the selection of vendors for research projects.
- Seek and evaluate concepts and technologies outside our industry for application to golf‑ball designs and fabrication.
- Employ sound scientific and engineering principles to define product specifications for manufacturing, perform advanced problem‑solving, and implement new process improvements.
- Create and provide project timelines, status updates, and technical‑summary reports as required.
- Document processes (SOP, etc.) and support product engineering teams working toward new golf‑ball product creation.
- Experience utilizing solid scientific study fundamentals and testing methods.
- Experience working on highly complex assignments requiring substantial knowledge and independent action to resolve problems and make recommendations.
- Ability to lead technical meetings and report project status.
- Experience using the engineering design process to develop and improve product performance.
- Experience with analysis or statistical tools such as Matlab, Minitab (ideal), or JMP (a plus).
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
- Ability to prioritize and multi‑task in fast‑paced settings, balancing significant projects and technical issues.
- Strong analytical and creative problem‑solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Understanding and interest in golf desirable.
- Knowledge of golf‑ball materials and processes preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, materials, statistics, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience. A minimum of five years of experience in sports product development, with scale‑up expertise preferred.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment- Work in a professional office workstation and environment.
- Frequent use of laboratory and office equipment, including computers, testing robots, and universal testing machines.
- Occasional lifting or carrying of up to 30 pounds.
- Exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals in R&D laboratories.
- Occasional domestic and/or international travel.
