Position: Engineering Technician I / II Utilities - City of Carlsbad, CA

The Position

The City of Carlsbad is currently seeking a diligent, committed, and skilled Engineering Technician for our Public Works Department. The current vacancy is in the Utilities Division. Carlsbad
-The Community:
This nearly 40 square mile city is ideally situated in north San Diego County with an approximate population of 115,000. It offers a great climate, beautiful beaches, lagoons and abundant natural open space. The Branch:
The Public Works Branch is responsible for planning, providing and maintaining infrastructure that supports Carlsbad's excellent quality of life. The branch includes a variety of departments including Environmental Sustainability, Fleet & Facilities, Construction Management & Inspection, Transportation and Utilities. More than 195 full-time equivalent staff support the branch which also has an annual total budget of over $123 million, along with a total Capital Improvement Program (CIP) appropriation of over $110 million

Key Responsibilities
  • Under direction, prepare or assist in the preparation of maps, exhibits, engineering standard drawings, plans, estimates of project quantities and/or costs, project schedules, memoranda, and technical reports pertaining to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of water, wastewater, and recycled water projects including pipelines, pump stations, sewer lift stations, reservoirs, and related appurtenances.
  • Perform computer-aided design and drafting using AutoCAD in connection with water and recycled water distribution systems and sewer collection systems.
  • Perform a variety of engineering and office duties in support of engineering staff. Use engineering design software and database spreadsheets.
  • Coordinate with material suppliers, vendors, and/or contractors to obtain quotes for work, equipment, or materials
  • Assist in the assessment, troubleshooting or collection, and reduction of data for utility systems and review or analyze fluid pressure, flow, volume, temperature, and level data
  • Assist administrative staff and engineers with meeting preparation, preparation and distribution of minutes, and other tasks as needed.
  • Maintain plan files and engineering records.
  • Update the GIS database of city assets and private assets contributing to city utility systems and maintain data dictionary.
  • Use the GIS database of city assets to create and print custom maps and spreadsheets and update asset reports. Communicate with other departments, and exchange information on assets collected.
