Position: Multi School Leader- Opportunity Culture

POSITION FUNCTION SUMMARY

The multi-school leader (MSL) leads a small group of two to eight related or closely located schools. The MSL leads a team of the schools’ principals; in some cases, the team also includes an instructional assistant principal or principal resident who leads a school with more direct instructional leadership from the MSL. Each school has multi‑classroom leaders responsible for instructional excellence in at least the four core subjects school wide.

The MSL typically continues to directly lead at least one school as its senior instructional leader, with the help of an instructional assistant principal or principal resident.

Multi School Leader Duties and Responsibilities
  • Communicate
    • Listen to understand needs of principals, staff, students, & families
    • Share clear & compelling vision, goals, roles, key steps, & progress toward goals in a continuous cycle
    • Communicate directly and through principals
  • Lead a Team of Principals on a Multi‑School Team
    • Launch & lead
    • Select the right principals (and other key leaders)
    • Set a clear, compelling vision for the multi‑school team
    • Clarify the MSL team’s vision, goals, roles and process
    • Make and share action plans with specific steps and schedule
    • Build team cohesion & spirit
    • Support & develop individual principals, assistant principals, residents, and/or operations manager—co‑plan, model, observe, & coach them in their leadership
  • Achieve Instructional Excellence – Guide principals to lead MCLs, who in turn lead teachers to complete the following
    • Set school vision, all school goals, & methods
    • Set broad & specific student learning goals
    • Select/improve school’s curriculum, materials, lessons, teaching methods, discipline practices, & other key items
    • Align lessons, activities, & assessments with curriculum
    • Design instruction with high standards and personalized elements for each student. Design assessments & data systems to accurately assess & respond to student growth
    • Ensure alignment with state & district
  • Connect with students & families to cultivate a culture of learning—use strong bonds to motivate
  • Establish superior classroom leadership
  • Execute rigorous, personalized lessons for mastery & growth
  • Monitor student learning data during the year—assess frequently for mastery & growth; capture data to use
  • Adjust instruction to meet each student’s needs—adjust teaching methods, work difficulty and assignments
  • Share data with students & families about student growth vs. goals that students help set
  • Lead Across the Multi‑School Team and Each School
    • Leading Teachers and Staff – Guide and coach principals to lead staff and operations
    • Design roles that let all staff learn, excel, & advance
    • Recruit & select capable people for each school role
    • Induct, train, assess, & develop to help people succeed
    • Require all staff to make essential changes
    • Dismiss staff if needed to support student learning & a positive culture
  • Leading Operations – Ensure that these areas support instruction & a culture of excellence school wide
    • Schedules for teaching, planning, collaboration, & coaching
    • Budgets for making optimal use of resources
    • Digital tools for assessment, instruction
    • Data systems to support rapid improvement
    • Facilities, equipment, & materials conducive to collaborative, high‑standards, personalized learning
    • Attendance & behavior policies that are positive & effective, inside & outside classrooms
  • Improve with Data
    • Collect, analyze, & use data in collaboration with principal team to improve all elements above throughout all the schools
    • Identify practices in the MSL’s schools that achieve strong student learning growth & MCL/teacher satisfaction, & incorporate into the MSL’s other schools
  • Other Professional Responsibilities
    • Solicit & eagerly receive feedback from district-level supervisor, principals, MCLs, teachers, & other staff to improve own professional skills
    • Participate in professional development opportunities in the district
  • Education and Experience
    • Master’s Degree from an accredited college.
    • A valid New Mexico administrator license.
    • Must be able to pass employment verification.
    • 5 years of teaching experience.
    • Excellent rating/high growth in two of three years as principal, ideally in an Opportunity Culture school with multi‑classroom leaders school wide.
    • Strong, positive written & oral communications in working with students & adults.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness working with people who have differing cultural backgrounds and/or personal characteristics, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or economic differences. Preference given for experience working successfully with those of similar demographics to the desired school placement.
    • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
