Essential Functions
  • Develop and implement a Guidance and Counseling Program for all grades and meet required timelines and adhere to School Board Policies and NMPED Regulations.
  • Obtain and disseminate occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations.
  • Assist students in selecting courses and evaluating their planned programs, aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.
  • Implements and maintains the EPSS, provide input on performance standards/ assessments, administer and coordinate all school testing programs(s), to include: ordering and shipping of materials, New Mexico Portfolio Assessment, CRT New Mexico High School Competency Examination, New Mexico Achievement Assessment, interpret test data.
  • Assist the principal or designee with the Master Teaching Schedule by providing necessary input based on student and curriculum needs.
  • Work with Principal/Teacher and attempts to resolve students’ educational problems such as: attendance, tardiness, truancy, etc…
  • Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
  • Work with Juvenile Probation Officer in preventing students from dropping out of school due to truancy.
  • Implement Career Education by assisting students in evaluating career interests and choices to include Armed Services,
  • Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will assist each student in increasing his/her personal growth, self understanding, and maturity.
  • Work with students on an individual basis on the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
  • Interact with students who are having difficulty coping with self-esteem, emotional problems, home situations, peer groups, school environment, cultural identity and behavioral problems.
  • Plan guidance trips to colleges and industry for interested students as part of Career Day and College Day.
  • Interpret the guidance and counseling program to the community and encourages students to participate in school and community activities.
  • Maintain students records and protect their confidentiality, initiate, assemble, maintain, and interpret accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records and uniform transcript records for students.
  • Verify that student grades are recorded in the cumulative records.
  • Supervise the preparation and processing of college applications, scholarship and assist with financial aid and employment applications.
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  • Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board’s policy on student records.
  • Confer with parents as the need arises or upon receiving a referral and participate in the development of a Parent Involvement Plan and Safety Plan.
  • Adhere to competencies for Counselor and establish mental Health Partnership.
  • Provide in-service training in Guidance/Counseling, student behavior, peer counseling, character counts, and discipline techniques for teachers.
  • Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the Guidance/Counseling department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
  • Advise administrators and faculty on the matters of students, parents, and the community at large.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
  • Implement a counseling substance abuse intervention component for those students who need help with substance abuse related problems.
  • Organize and conduct annual “Career Day” and “College Day”
  • Annually conduct a prior year annual graduate follow-up study.
  • Serve in the Student Assistance Team (SAT) and/or General Screening Committee to ensure that academic gains are maintained by exploring alternative instructional methodologies, materials and teaching techniques. All records and interventions will be documented and the proper SAT Documentation will be in compliance with The SAT Manual before any Diagnostic or referral can be made to Special Ed.
