Engineering Technician - Geotechnical

Overview

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as an Engineering Technician – Geotechnical and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a USW bargaining unit position and will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement before any other candidate considerations.

Collect geotechnical instrumentation and field data in the WIPP underground, process and fabricate instrumentation, assist engineers in data collection and processing, support underground openings inspections, identify ground condition hazards, and mitigate hazards. Candidates must be able to walk on even and uneven surfaces, climb ladders and steps, qualify to work underground, read dials and gauges, follow procedures, record readings accurately, operate computers, maintain databases, qualify to operate diesel and electrical lift equipment, lift up to 20 pounds, perform overhead work such as drilling and laser alignments, use Theodolite, survey levels, and electronic distance measuring devices, and be able to work in radiological contaminated areas.

• High School Graduate or Equivalency is required.
• Two (2) years underground experience is required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. (See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.)
