Overview

Mechanical Engineer II / Quality Control Lead – Carlsbad, New Mexico (Ideally) or Open to Phoenix, Arizona (with more travel). Office & Fabrication Shop Based.

As a Mechanical Engineer II / Quality Control Lead, you’ll design and support mechanical equipment while ensuring that what gets built meets ASME code requirements, quality standards and long-term operability expectations. This is a hands-on role for someone who values accountability, documentation discipline and collaboration with fabricators, inspectors, and project teams, from early design to fabrication, inspection and startup.

Cross-Functional Impact. You’ll work with an in-house fabrication shop, inspectors and project teams and partner with Engineering, Project Management, Fabrication, Procurement, Construction, Operations and Quality.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineering (Primary Focus)

  • Design pressure vessels and mechanical equipment with consideration for piping, valves, relief devices, foundations and structural components
  • Perform ASME code calculations (Section I, Section VIII Div. 1, ASME B31.1, API 650/620) using CEI, Codeware/COMPASS and hand calculations
  • Review drawings, specifications, P&IDs and vendor data for compliance and mechanical integrity
  • Prepare equipment, piping, material specifications and scopes of work
  • Support procurement through technical bid evaluations, vendor selection and data review
  • Coordinate with fabrication and construction teams to resolve engineering or quality issues
  • Witness inspections and testing (e.g., hydrostatic testing) and document results
  • Provide mechanical support to operating plants, fabrication activities and small-capital projects
  • Travel as needed to support fabrication shops, vendors and project sites

Quality Control & Compliance (Integrated Responsibility)

  • Maintain and administer the Project Services Quality Control Program
  • Ensure compliance with ASME ‘U’, ‘S’, and ‘R’ stamp requirements
  • Coordinate Authorized Inspectors (AI), third-party NDE and required inspections
  • Maintain ASME code files, QC documentation, weld procedures, welder qualifications and inspection records
  • Review material certifications (MTRs), receiving inspections, and fabrication documentation
  • Manage Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) and follow issues through to resolution
  • Support audits, certifications and ongoing shop compliance activities
  • Provide guidance and backup support to QC inspectors as needed
Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5-10 years of mechanical engineering experience in pressure vessels and/or piping
  • Working knowledge of ASME codes and quality control requirements
  • Experience in fabrication shops or industrial environments
  • Strong communication, organization and follow-through skills
  • Ability to balance engineering judgment with compliance and documentation discipline
  • Comfort working cross-functionally with engineers, fabricators, inspectors and project teams

Nice To Have

  • Prior experience supporting or leading ASME QC programs
  • Familiarity with plant operations or field construction support
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or inspectors
Work Environment & Travel

Office- and shop-based role that supports fabrication activities. Occasional short-duration travel for inspections, vendor visits and testing. Primarily standard business hours, with flexibility during critical fabrication or inspection phases.
