What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Year‑Round R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team in Carlsbad, NM. The role supports hydrology/geochemistry teams in the Repository Science R+D Team and may involve field work, laboratory work, data management, or data analysis.
Responsibilities- Assist in gathering hydrologic field data, operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation.
- Assist in laboratory experimentation on non‑organic/non‑radioactive samples using basic and advanced equipment.
- Perform entry‑level work within a research and development, science and engineering environment alongside Sandia staff, applying the scientific method to recognize problems, collect data, conduct experiments, and formulate and test hypotheses.
- Support work in fundamentals of science and engineering while applying an understanding of engineering and scientific principles.
- Assist in the creation and application of scientific theories and laws and engineering methods to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems.
Our interns earn competitive pay rates based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package.
Required Qualifications- Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program.
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance requiring U.S. citizenship.
- Majors in Hydrology, Geochemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or Geological Engineering.
- General knowledge of technical principles and processes.
- Understanding of varied research tools.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Team‑work orientation.
- Basic project management knowledge.
- Competence with Microsoft Office and related software.
- Alignment with Sandia's core values.
- Ability to perform physical work in a desert climate.
- Understanding of, and adherence to, safety requirements.
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
