Responsibilities
- Independently plans, conducts, and prepares reports and decisions affecting mineral development projects.
- Prepares subsurface contour maps and cross sections of oil and gas fields and mineral deposits based on correlation and interpretation of geophysical well logs, seismographic data, and geostatistical data in manual and electronic database formats.
- Provides geologic data and analysis to support calculations of resource and fair market values of tracts offered for mineral leasing or disposal, including both solid and fluid minerals.
- Prepares comprehensive maps and interpretative reports describing results of field observations and office studies; establishing the character and potential value of the lands with respect to drainage protection or lease development.
- Prepares comprehensive geologic reports and studies for all phases of land‑use planning efforts including resource management and activity plans.
- Reviews drilling applications for geologic integrity and ensures protection of subsurface resources by providing recommendations to the Branch of Fluid Operations.
- Reviews exploratory, secondary, and gas storage unit agreement proposals for geologic integrity, equity and fairness in participation formulas, and proper development and establishment of participation areas.
- Reviews drilling and recompletion activity and production history of all oil and gas wells in the area assigned to detect drainage of federal or Indian minerals or the lack of Indian mineral development.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Merit‑promotion applicants must meet time‑in‑grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
- Suitability for employment as determined by background investigation.
- Driver’s license:
Incumbent must operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties and must hold a valid state driver’s license throughout employment. - Individuals assigned male at birth after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service. Verification .
- Cannot hold an active real‑estate license or have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands.
- May require a one-year probationary or two-year trial period.
- Direct deposit required.
- Basic Requirement
- Degree in geology or equivalent, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, cartography.
- Or combination of education and experience: coursework as above plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- Experience Evaluation
—Acceptable experience must involve professional geological knowledge and application of principles, including field or laboratory work, data acquisition, analysis, and reporting. Experience limited to a single phase (e.g., sample collection) is not sufficient. - Minimum Qualification [GS‑12]
- One year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑11 in the Federal service, involving advanced geological expertise and support for drainage and diligence activities; permit to drill approvals; unitization agreements; land‑use planning; evaluation of mineral deposits; economic potential assessments of leasable minerals; responsibility for scientific content and integrity of mineral reports and decisions.
