Close Date: 03-06-2026. Target Pay Range: $15.00-$20.41 per hour or $31,200 - $42,459.04 annually.
Location:
The Fifth Judicial District Court in Eddy County, Carlsbad, New Mexico. The position is in the Range BB and is unarmed. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Acting under the direct supervision of a Judge, this role ensures proper behavior in the courtroom and provides customer service.

- The Bailiff assists Judges, Jurors, and other parties during courtroom proceedings and maintains proper courtroom decorum.
- Sets up and maintains the courtroom during proceedings; coordinates with law enforcement on inmate transportation to and from the courthouse and/or courtroom.
- Works with attorneys requiring special equipment for a hearing; manages, secures, and maintains exhibits entered as evidence; preserves exhibits until handed off at the end of trial.
- Obtains files and Judge’s notes for review; assembles files in the order cases are to be heard for the day; ensures Judge has updated files, motions, and documents.
- Assists in assembling potential jurors, instructs jurors on processes, and provides ongoing juror support during trials; maintains juror time records and ensures proper seating and presence of all parties.
- Swears in witnesses and proper parties; enters dispositions into the case management system and prepares orders for the Judge’s signature.
- Performs Court Monitor duties; assists in document flow between the Judge, attorneys, and pro se parties; acts as a liaison with local law enforcement.
- Trains and supports other bailiffs; announces Judge’s entrance and departure, maintaining decorum in the courtroom.

The successful applicant should demonstrate knowledge of general court procedures, security management and safety practices, evacuation procedures, fire alarm systems, metal detectors and security equipment, mobile x-ray inspection systems, safety and security processes, first aid techniques, fire and police reporting procedures, electronic equipment, and judiciary and courtroom protocols.
Work Environment and Physical DemandsWork is performed in an office or court setting. A valid driver’s license and travel may be required. The assigned work schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. The employee must regularly interact positively with co-workers, clients, the public, judges, and justices. One (1) year of experience in security, law enforcement, or a legal setting. Post-secondary education may substitute for general experience at 30 semester hours per year. - Other:
Selected candidates will receive additional security training specific to the court, including operation of security and metal detecting equipment and first aid training (including CPR and AED).
