Overview
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with the opportunity to understand day‑to‑day operations and gain hands‑on clinical experience. Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gather patient histories, perform physical exams, create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, provide dentistry services, observe or assist in surgical procedures, and manage medical care.
Schedule and LocationsExternship lengths range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Some locations, such as Carlsbad Animal Clinic, offer housing.

- Observe or assist in surgical procedures
- Manage medical care of patients
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
