Facilities Water Systems Specialist
Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Facilities Water Systems Specialist to join the Facilities team. This position is responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of campus water distribution, irrigation, plumbing, natural gas, and related utility systems. The Facilities Water Systems Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of utility infrastructure that supports campus facilities and grounds.
The position performs journey-level skilled trades work involving water distribution systems, plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems, pumps, valves, backflow prevention devices, water heating equipment, and other associated infrastructure components. Responsibilities include monitoring system performance, identifying and resolving operational issues, supporting regulatory compliance, and implementing preventive maintenance practices that enhance system reliability, maximize efficiency, and minimize disruptions to campus operations. As a member of the Facilities team, this position may also assist with other maintenance activities, departmental projects, and operational needs as workload and scheduling permit.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of the principles, operation, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of domestic water distribution, plumbing, irrigation, natural gas, and related campus utility systems. Skills in diagnosing and troubleshooting water, plumbing, irrigation, and utility system failures, repairing and maintaining commercial and institutional plumbing, water distribution, and irrigation systems, reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and specifications, operating tools, equipment, and testing devices associated with plumbing and irrigation systems, prioritizing and managing multiple maintenance and repair assignments, performing journey-level plumbing and water systems maintenance and repair work, analyzing complex system issues, and implementing effective corrective actions.
Ability to respond effectively during emergencies and system outages, maintain accurate records and documentation, follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to safety requirements, work independently and collaboratively while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Work environment and physical demand include ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally heavier items with assistance, use of manual dexterity sufficient to operate electrical tools, testing equipment, and hand tools, work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions, work involves exposure to moderate occupational hazards requiring strict adherence to safety procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), and regulatory compliance standards, frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching, ability to climb ladders and work at heights, ability to work in confined spaces and restricted access areas, demonstrated ability to communicate information clearly in both oral and written form, strong ability to understand, interpret, and follow written and verbal instructions, use of computer and video display terminal, may require flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and on-call availability, to respond to emergency repairs and support campus utility operations.
Performing the essential functions of this position requires the use of a computer throughout most of the workday, the ability to navigate a typical office environment, significant amounts of interpersonal interaction including oral and written communication, and the ability to keep track of multiple tasks, projects, deadlines, information sources, and business processes.
