Job Summary

The Materials Science Analyst provides materials, surface, and analytical science support for Carlstadt Analytical as the Center of Excellence for Print Science. The role focuses on applying analytical techniques and materials science principles to formulation‑ and print‑related problem solving, with emphasis on interpretation of data in formulation and process context.

The position supports Polymer, Formulation, and Applications teams by translating analytical, surface, and computational insights into practical guidance that enables rapid, informed decision‑making under short response timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Analytical, Materials & Surface Science Support

Perform analytical testing and interpretation related to raw materials, inks, polymers, dispersions, and formulated systems, with emphasis on surface and interfacial effects impacting print performance
Apply materials and surface science principles to evaluate structure–property relationships affecting wetting, adhesion, stability, compatibility, and processability
Solve problems and translate analytical and surface‑property data into actionable formulation and processing guidance

Instrumentation & Characterization

Operate and interpret data from analytical instruments including rheometers, GPC, GC, and standard physico‑chemical test methods such as surface energy, particle size and dispersion stability
Support microscopy and surface‑relevant characterization techniques to link product quality, microstructure, and interfacial behavior to performance outcomes
Utilize HSP and surface energy analyses to guide material selection and formulation decisions

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Support Polymer, Formulation, and Applications teams in troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis for print performance, variability, and manufacturing challenges
Communicate analytical findings clearly to enable application‑ready implementation
Contribute to reducing iterative trial‑and‑error by providing timely, insight‑driven guidance

Data & Computational Support

Apply computational, statistical, and data‑analysis tools to support interpretation of experimental and surface‑interaction data
Analyze experimental trends to inform material, formulation, and process recommendations

Education & Experience

 Required

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related scientific discipline
1–3 years of relevant experience, including internships, co‑ops, or laboratory research, in analytical testing, polymer science, formulation, or related technical environments
Hands‑on experience with analytical techniques such as rheology, chromatography (GPC/GC), viscosity, or physico‑chemical testing
Working knowledge of materials and surface science fundamentals (e.g., wetting, surface energy, dispersion behavior)
Ability to interpret data and communicate results effectively in a team‑based environment

Preferred

Exposure to inks, coatings, dispersions, or printing processes
Experience supporting Polymer or Applications functions
Familiarity with HSP, surface energy concepts, microscopy, or basic computational/data‑analysis tools

Core Competencies

 Analytical thinking and problem solving
 Learning agility and adaptability
 Collaboration and cross‑functional communication
 Planning,…
