Part-Time Public Educator
Make a difference before the emergency ever happens.
The Carmel Fire Department is looking for an energetic, engaging, and community-minded Part-Time Public Educator to help teach fire and life safety throughout our community. As the face of our S.A.F.E. House program, you'll inspire children, families, schools, businesses, and community organizations with life-saving education that helps prevent emergencies before they occur.

What You'll Do
No two days are exactly alike. In this role, you'll:
- Deliver engaging fire and life safety education through the Carmel Fire Department's S.A.F.E. House program.
- Coordinate educational visits with schools, community organizations, businesses, and other groups.
- Develop and enhance age-appropriate educational curriculum and presentations.
- Collaborate with firefighters, civilian staff, volunteers, and other public safety agencies on community outreach initiatives.
- Represent the Carmel Fire Department at community events and public education programs.
- Promote fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and life safety awareness for audiences of all ages.
- Maintain accurate scheduling, records, and program data.
- Support community engagement efforts and recommend new educational opportunities that strengthen public safety.

What You'll Bring
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Vocational or technical training in the fire service preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience in the fire service or related field preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience in childhood education or instructional programming preferred.
- Fire and Life Safety Educator I/II certification preferred, or willingness to obtain.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to successfully complete required training.
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge and skills will also be considered.
Physical Requirements
This position includes both office and active educational environments and requires the ability to:
- Stand for extended periods while teaching or presenting.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull materials weighing up to 50 to 100 pounds.
- Bend, kneel, crouch, climb stairs, and move throughout educational settings.
- Operate a computer and standard office software.
- Travel throughout the community to conduct educational programs.
