JOB SUMMARY

This is an ideal opportunity to work at a growing organization with a strong family culture. Shepherd Insurance is a privately-owned insurance agency that has delivered risk management solutions since 1977. With a wide variety of insurance and financial products, we are among the largest independent agencies in the country.

DESCRIPTION

As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will own the day-to-day health, reliability, and security of Shepherd's core technology infrastructure, including servers, virtualization, network, identity, endpoint management, and backup. As Shepherd brings this work in-house, you will be the hands on owner who keeps our systems running, responds when they break, and builds the standards and documentation that let our infrastructure scale with the business.

This role works closely with the Director of IT, the Systems Engineer, and the Information Security Analyst. It owns infrastructure operations rather than people leadership or technical strategy, partnering with those leaders to keep Shepherd's environment stable, secure, and well-documented.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage and maintain Windows and Linux servers and virtual machines, including patching, scheduled maintenance, and reboots.
  • Administer the virtualization environment (VMware / vSphere and hypervisor management) to ensure uptime and performance.
  • Monitor system resources and system event logs to identify and resolve issues before they impact users.
  • Manage Fortinet firewalls, switches, routers, and load balancers, including configuration, VPN, policies, firmware updates, logging, vendor support, and change management.
  • Administer wireless access points and controllers across Shepherd's locations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve circuit and non-circuit network outages, and maintain proactive network performance monitoring.
  • Administer internal and external DNS records, DHCP scopes, IP addressing, and related network services to support reliable connectivity across Shepherd locations.
  • Coordinate low-voltage cabling, wiring closet, rack, and network installation projects with approved vendors, including requirements gathering, standards, testing, labeling, and documentation.
  • Perform Active Directory administration, including user and group add/change/delete, access rights, and Group Policy.
  • Manage endpoint configuration and deployment through Intune and Autopilot, ensuring devices are secured and standardized.
  • Support Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online administration, including mailbox configuration, email routing, migration support, and post-migration troubleshooting.
  • Review backup logs daily, perform regular test restores, and maintain backup and recovery readiness.
  • Support business continuity and disaster recovery, including UPS maintenance and related infrastructure.
  • Partner with the Information Security Analyst on vulnerability management, patch remediation, and monitoring for abnormal network activity.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex infrastructure issues that rise above front-line help desk support.
  • Establish and maintain current infrastructure documentation, configurations, and asset records.
  • Manage vendor and manufacturer support relationships for hardware and software under warranty or contract.
  • Support the transition of infrastructure services in‑house from the managed service provider, ensuring no coverage gap.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong hands-on experience administering Windows Server, Active Directory, and virtualization (VMware / Hyper‑V).
  • Working knowledge of network administration, including firewalls, switches, routers, and wireless infrastructure.
  • Experience managing DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, and related network services.
  • Experience administering Fortinet firewalls, Forti Gate, VPN, and related network security services, preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, and endpoint management via Intune and Autopilot.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online migrations, preferred.
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery tools, and sound understanding of infrastructure security best practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues methodically and…
