Position Description

The High School Social Worker provides comprehensive school-based social work services designed to support students' academic success, attendance, behavioral needs, and overall well-being. The Social Worker collaborates with students, families, teachers, administrators, counselors, special education personnel, and community agencies to identify barriers to student success and develop appropriate interventions and supports.

The Social Worker serves as an advocate and resource for students and families and assists in connecting students with school and community services. The position requires the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and circumstances while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality, and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and school corporation policies.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution
  • Appropriate Indiana licensure or credentialing required for the position, consistent with Indiana requirements
  • School social work preparation or experience in an educational setting preferred
  • Experience working with adolescents and families preferred
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of social work principles, practices, and ethics in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and factors affecting student academic and social-emotional success
  • Knowledge of community resources and social service systems
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to establish trusting relationships with adolescents and families
  • Ability to conduct appropriate assessments and develop effective interventions
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information appropriately
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to respond appropriately and calmly during crisis situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff, administrators, and community agencies
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment within the scope of the position
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards consistent with the role of a school-based social worker
  • Demonstrate respect for the dignity, confidentiality, and individual needs of students and families
  • Establish positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners
  • Promote a safe, supportive, inclusive, and student-centered school environment
  • Maintain current knowledge of social work practices, adolescent development, mental health resources, and community services
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, committees, and school activities as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or appropriate administrator
Working Conditions
  • Work is primarily performed in a high school educational environment
  • Regular interaction with students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and community providers is required
  • May involve working with students experiencing emotional distress, behavioral concerns, family crises, or other challenging circumstances
  • May require occasional travel between school or community locations and home visits when appropriate
  • May require occasional work outside the regular school day for meetings, conferences, professional development, or school activities
Physical and Mental Efforts
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the school environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication
  • Ability to operate standard office and technology equipment
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency or crisis situations
