Job Details
• Inpatient Palliative Care unit within an acute care hospital setting at a Level II Trauma Center,
• Palliative care team includes 2 physicians, 1 NP, 3 RNs, and 3 supplemental RNs,
• Daily census of approximately 55 patients, with an average of 15-17 new patients per day,
• The team manages 10-15 consults per day; individual RN caseload includes up to 5-6 new patients and 3-4 follow-up visits per day,
• Patient population includes any patient meeting palliative care screening criteria across hospital units and floors, initiated by physician consultation order,
• Charting performed in Cerner,
• Day shift, 8-hour shifts with a 0730 or 0800 start time,
• Every other weekend required,
• No on-call requirements,
• No traditional floating; however, RNs visit patients across multiple units and floors throughout the medical center,
• Holiday coverage required on a rotating basis with core staff,
• 3-4 day unit-specific orientation with the Palliative Care RN Coordinator and physicians,
Job Requirements
• Active CA RN license required; must be active at time of consideration - pending licenses not accepted,
• Current BLS certification required; ELNEC (End of Life Nursing Education Consortium) certification preferred,
• Minimum 2-5 years of recent experience in a palliative care and/or hospice setting required,
• ICU and/or oncology experience a plus,
• Strong acute care clinical judgment and communication skills required,
• Flexibility and strong organizational skills required,
• Must pass Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) prior to offer confirmation,
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire,
• Copy of driver's license required for consideration,
Additional Information
• Role responsibilities include developing daily patient lists, reviewing patient charts, assessing patient needs, initiating goals-of-care discussions, providing education on disease processes and advance directives/POLSTs, holding family meetings as needed, providing end-of-life support, and attending daily rounds,
• This is a coordinator-style RN role with no hands-on direct patient care,
• Faith-based organization,
• Business casual attire required, including comfortable shoes and a long white lab jacket,
• Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered,
• A sterile technique skills test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation,
• A manager interview is required as part of the selection process
