Apprentice Tool & Die Maker Program

Eaton's Carol Stream facility is seeking motivated candidates to join the Apprentice Tool & Die Maker program. This is a structured, long-term career development opportunity designed to prepare individuals for a skilled Tool & Die Maker role through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on, mentored on-the-job training. Position Overview:

The Apprentice Tool & Die Maker participates in a multi-year, progressive training program intended to develop fully qualified Tool & Die Makers. Apprentices receive formal classroom instruction alongside structured on-the-job training (OJT) under the guidance of experienced mentors. Advancement and pay progression are based on demonstrated skill mastery, successful completion of coursework, and sustained job performance—not tenure alone.

The program is designed to address workforce continuity, develop internal talent, preserve institutional knowledge, and support long-term business growth.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Participate in a structured five-year apprenticeship program combining classroom instruction and on-the-job training
  • Complete three (3) years of related classroom instruction through the Technology & Manufacturing Association (TMA)
  • Complete a minimum of five (5) years of progressive, mentored on-the-job training, beginning at program entry
  • Learn and demonstrate proficiency in required tooling, machining, precision measurement, and problem-solving skills
  • Complete annual skill checklists validating technical and behavioral competency
  • Work closely with assigned mentors to develop trade skills and job readiness
  • Maintain required academic performance standards to remain in good standing
  • Follow all safety, quality, and productivity standards at all times
  • Successfully complete a final Tool & Die Maker skill assessment at program completion
Qualifications:

Required (Basic)

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to pass the TMA Entrance Exam
  • Basic attendance and performance history that meets expectations
  • Access to a computer and internet for coursework
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in machining, tooling, or manufacturing environments
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and interest in skilled trades
  • Long-term interest in pursuing a Tool & Die Maker career
  • Skilled in math

Additional Information:

Program Structure:

Classroom Instruction (Related Theory):

  • Delivered through the Technology & Manufacturing Association (TMA)
  • Total of 504 instructional hours over three years
  • Evening classes, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., September through April
  • Apprentices must maintain passing grades to continue in the program

On-the-Job Training (OJT):

  • Hands-on training under the guidance of assigned mentors
  • Annual skill evaluations and ongoing performance feedback
  • Year-round training aligned to defined progression milestones

Pay Progression & Advancement:

  • Compensation is skill-based and tied to successful completion of annual skill checklists
  • Advancement requires completion of both classroom and on-the-job training milestones
  • Progression is subject to mentor validation, leadership review, and HR approval
  • Pay progression may be delayed if performance, attendance, or safety standards are not met

  • Apprentices promoted to Tool & Die Maker are eligible for a sign-on / stay-on bonus
