CNC Machinist – Milling Department (Setup Operator)
This role focuses on setting up and operating CNC milling machines in a clean, climate-controlled shop. You will be responsible for machine setup, operation, and basic program edits to produce precision components that consistently meet tight tolerances.
Responsibilities- Set up CNC milling machines, including securing all required tooling and measuring instruments before production begins.
- Operate CNC mills to start, stop, and restart machines as needed while maintaining safe and efficient workflow.
- Adjust tooling to maintain proper dimensions, and replace broken or worn tools to ensure consistent part quality.
- Verify that work pieces conform to specifications using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and go/no-go gauges.
- Position and secure work pieces in holding devices, machine tables, chucks, centers, or fixtures to ensure accurate machining.
- Adjust work offsets and part zero to maintain dimensional accuracy and meet print requirements.
- Modify machine speed and feed according to part specifications, material type, and tooling requirements.
- Perform daily preventative machine maintenance, including monitoring coolant levels, checking filters and fan operation, and cleaning machines.
- Load tools into the machine and set tool diameters so cutter radius compensation can be used effectively.
- Install and adjust work holding devices to support efficient and accurate machining operations.
- Consistently hold tight tolerances of ±0.0005 on machined components.
- Edit CNC programs as needed to improve performance or resolve dimensional issues within approved parameters.
- Read and interpret blueprints to determine machining requirements and verify finished parts.
- Support production needs by taking on additional responsibilities or transferring to other departments as assigned by supervision.
- 2–3 years of experience setting up and operating CNC mills.
- Ability to edit CNC programs at the machine control.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints accurately.
- Proficiency with measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and go-no-go gauges.
- Experience holding tight machining tolerances of ±0.0005.
- Hands-on experience with CNC milling machines, including vertical mills.
- Understanding of work offsets, part zero, and cutter radius compensation.
- Knowledge of adjusting machine speed and feed based on part and material specifications.
- Capability to perform routine preventative maintenance on CNC equipment.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with CNC lathes in addition to mills is valued.
- Familiarity with Haas and Mazak CNC equipment.
- Exposure to multi-axis machining environments.
- Background in general machining and machine setup.
- Comfort working from detailed blueprints in a production environment.
- Ability to adapt to department transfers to support changing production needs
The role is based in a clean, well-lit, climate-controlled machine shop. The environment features modern CNC milling equipment, including vertical mills and systems from manufacturers such as Haas and Mazak, and supports precise machining work with tight tolerances.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carol Stream, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $32.00/hr.
