Quality Manager is responsible for leading the quality management system for a machining operation operating under ISO 9001. This role ensures products, processes, and documentation meet customer, regulatory, and internal requirements while driving continuous improvement in safety, quality, delivery, and cost. The Quality Manager works closely with production, engineering, supply chain, and leadership to maintain compliance, reduce defects, improve process capability, and support customer satisfaction.
Reports to: Plant Manager, Director of Operations, Director of Quality
Key Responsibilities Quality Management System- Maintain and improve the ISO 9001 quality management system for the machining facility
- Ensure procedures, work instructions, forms, and records are current and controlled
- Lead internal audits, support external audits, and coordinate corrective actions for audit findings
- Manage document control, record retention, and quality-related change control
- Serve as the site lead for ISO 9001 certification readiness, surveillance, and recertification activities
- Oversee incoming, in-process, and final inspection activities
- Ensure inspection methods, sampling plans, and acceptance criteria are defined and followed
- Review nonconforming material and lead disposition activities, including rework, repair, use-as-is, and scrap
- Monitor key quality metrics, including scrap, rework, first-pass yield, customer complaints, and cost of poor quality
- Maintain calibration systems for measuring and test equipment
- Lead root cause investigations for internal defects, customer returns, supplier quality issues, and process escapes
- Drive corrective and preventive actions using structured problem-solving methods such as 8D, 5 Why, fishbone, and Pareto analysis
- Verify corrective action effectiveness and ensure timely closure
- Promote preventive actions that reduce variation and improve repeatability in machining processes
- Partner with manufacturing and engineering to improve process capability across CNC machining, turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and related operations
- Support control plans, process flow documentation, inspection plans, and process validation as required
- Review part drawings, GD&T requirements, and customer specifications to ensure process and inspection compliance
- Assist with process capability studies, first article inspections, mistake-proofing, and process controls
- Serve as the primary quality contact for customer audits, complaints, corrective actions, and quality performance reviews
- Support supplier qualification, supplier corrective actions, and incoming quality improvement efforts
- Work with customers and suppliers to resolve technical and quality concerns in a timely, professional manner
- Lead, coach, and develop quality inspectors, technicians, and quality engineers, as applicable
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement across the operation
- Provide quality reporting and recommendations to plant leadership
- Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen quality performance and process stability
- Bachelor’s degree in Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of quality leadership experience in a machining or metal manufacturing environment
- Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management systems
Experience with machining processes, blueprint reading, tolerances, GD&T, and inspection methods - Experience leading audits, corrective actions, and root cause investigations
- Familiarity with metrology tools and equipment, including calipers, micrometers, height gages, bore gages, CMMs, and surface finish measurement
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and quality reporting tools
- ASQ certification such as CQM, CQE, or CQA preferred
