Senior Environmental Scientist / Geologist - Phase I & II ESA and Remediation
Job Description
This role leads environmental due diligence and remediation projects with a primary focus on Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs). The position manages projects from initial proposal through final reporting, mentors junior staff, and serves as a key technical resource on Illinois EPA SRP and LUST programs. The ideal candidate brings extensive Phase I ESA and remediation experience, strong report writing skills, and the ability to build effective relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
Responsibilities
+ Lead Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) projects from start to finish, including planning, field work coordination, data review, and final report preparation.
+ Conduct and oversee Phase I environmental site assessments, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
+ Assist with Phase II ESAs, including environmental sampling, data interpretation, and documentation of findings.
+ Characterize soil for disposal using LPC-663 forms or Subtitle D profiling and ensure proper documentation and compliance.
+ Support and oversee environmental remediation activities, including soil sampling, environmental monitoring, and site assessment tasks.
+ Utilize expertise in Illinois EPA Site Remediation Program (SRP) and Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) programs to guide sites through investigation, remediation, and closure.
+ Keep key stakeholders, including clients and internal team members, engaged and informed throughout project life cycles.
+ Prepare clear, accurate, and technically sound environmental reports, including Phase I and Phase II ESA reports and remediation documentation.
+ Review and quality-check reports prepared by junior staff to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
+ Oversee and mentor junior staff, providing training, technical guidance, and feedback on field methods, data analysis, and report writing.
+ Manage multiple projects simultaneously (typically 4-5 or more at a time), maintaining schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
+ Communicate directly with clients to discuss project scopes, findings, recommendations, and next steps.
+ Apply strong project management skills to coordinate field activities, lab work, and reporting for residential, solar, and commercial projects.
+ Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company procedures, including health and safety requirements such as OSHA HAZWOPER.
+ Contribute to a collaborative team environment by sharing knowledge in environmental science, geology, asbestos awareness, site assessment, and environmental compliance.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a closely related field.
+ Minimum of 6+ years of environmental remediation and due diligence experience, specifically focused on Phase I ESAs.
+ Extensive hands-on experience with Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, including planning, execution, and report preparation.
+ Experience assisting with Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, including soil sampling, site assessment, and environmental monitoring.
+ Strong technical report writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and detailed environmental reports.
+ Proven experience reviewing and quality-checking environmental reports prepared by others.
+ Thorough knowledge and practical experience with Illinois EPA Site Remediation Program (SRP) and Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) programs.
+ Background in environmental science, geology, and environmental compliance.
+
Experience with soil sampling, soil characterization, and environmental remediation activities.
+ Familiarity with asbestos-related considerations in environmental site assessments.
+ Demonstrated project management skills, including managing multiple concurrent projects.
+ Strong interpersonal skills; must be personable, collaborative, and eager to continue learning.
+ Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
+ 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification or the ability to renew or obtain it in a timely manner.
