Building Official – City of Carpinteria, California
The City of Carpinteria is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and customer‑focused Building Official to join its Community Development Department.
This position serves as the City’s primary building official and plays a key role in supporting safe, high-quality development within Carpinteria’s unique coastal community. The Building Official performs plan review and field inspections, provides code interpretation, oversees permit services, and works closely with planners, contractors, design professionals, property owners, and the public.

Salary and Benefits$87,976.36–$ annually
, depending on qualifications, plus a generous benefits package.
- Plan, manage, and oversee Building Division operations, including inspections, plan review, and permit processing.
- Administer and enforce federal, state, and local building codes and regulations.
- Review complex construction plans and building permit applications.
- Conduct and oversee residential and commercial field inspections.
- Provide technical guidance and code interpretations to contractors, architects, engineers, property owners, City staff, and the public.
- Develop procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of building services.
- Investigate complaints and code violations and identify appropriate corrective actions.
- Manage consultants and contractual building services.
- Assist with development and administration of the Building Division budget.
- Provide responsive, professional, and solutions‑oriented customer service.
The ideal candidate will bring substantial experience in building inspection, plan checking, code enforcement, permitting, and building division operations. The successful candidate will be a strong communicator who can interpret and explain complex requirements while working collaboratively with applicants, consultants, City departments, and community members.
Candidates must possess at least one of the following certifications at the time of appointment:
- ICC Combination Building Inspector
- ICC Plans Examiner
- Building Official Certificate
CASp certification and Cal OES Safety Assessment Program experience are desirable.
