Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg & Pediatrics position at a Level IV trauma CAH requiring a minimum of 3 years of Med/Surg/Peds experience and 1 year of travel nursing experience.

Details
  • Acute care setting at a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) with a Level IV trauma designation
  • Combined Med/Surg and Pediatrics unit with 19 beds, with overflow capacity into the CCU
  • Common diagnoses include CHF, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, orthopedic surgeries (knee, hip, shoulder replacements), colon and general surgeries, and pediatric RSV
  • Goal nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4, with potential for up to 1:6
  • Nurse aides available with a goal ratio of 1:6 on days and 1:8 on nights, varying by census and staffing
  • Heparin drips are routinely titrated on this unit
  • Telemetry monitoring is conducted by CCU nurses; telemetry interpretation skills are preferred but not required — Philips Monitors are used
  • Charting is done in MEDITECH
  • Day shift, 12-hour shifts, 3x12s, with a 7am start time
  • 6-week cyclic scheduling; schedule accommodations are made when possible but block scheduling is not guaranteed
  • Every third weekend required, including Fri/Sat/Sun (flexibility available for Sat/Sun/Mon if needed)
  • Floating to CCU or OB is required; cross-training to behavioral health and ER is optional but welcomed
  • One major and one minor holiday required, aligned with the season of the contract (winter or summer)
Requirements
  • Active Iowa (IA) or Compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and PALS
  • Minimum 3 years of Med/Surg and/or Pediatrics RN experience required
  • Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience required
  • Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
Additional Information
  • Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift
  • Charge nurse oversees both the MSP and CCU units; the charge nurse typically does not carry a patient load but may take assignments during high-census or staffing needs
  • A house supervisor is based in the ED and oversees the entire hospital and nursing home
  • Physical med drawer keys are managed through the Pyxis — nurses are responsible for checking out and returning keys each shift; failure to return a key may result to a replacement fee
  • Scrub colors permitted: grey, black, pink, or white
  • Candidates are expected to be aware of and contribute to active quality improvement projects and initiatives on the unit
