The Graduate Teaching Assistant (Level
1) is the first stage of a possible two‑year GTA Pathway. It is a mentored position that supports laboratory and discussion sections in introductory first‑year courses under a supervising faculty member. The role is not an independent instruction but prepares the assistant for future instructor responsibilities.
- Prepare and support assigned laboratory or discussion sections, including setup, materials management and safety compliance in lab science courses. Provide in‑class assistance to students during faculty‑led instruction. Coordinate with the faculty supervisor to ensure section readiness and alignment with course objectives.
- Grade assignments, quizzes and examinations using rubrics and standards established by the faculty of record. Provide timely, constructive written feedback that supports student learning. Develop consistency and sound judgment in academic assessment under faculty guidance.
- Hold regular tutoring and office hours to provide direct, supported contact with students outside of class. Meet regularly with the supervising faculty mentor to review teaching development, discuss student progress and reflect on instructional practice. Participate in required GTA training and professional development activities coordinated by the Graduate School.
- Fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG (provisional admission not eligible).
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Enrolled full‑time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all graduate coursework and remain in good academic standing.
- Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
- Degree in Natural Sciences, Computing and Mathematics, or Humanities and Social Sciences.
- Licensed driver.
- Monthly stipend of $1,400.00.
- Tuition waiver reducing semester rate to $25 plus mandatory fees as long as employed in the assistantship.

- Assistants in lab science placements should expect extended periods of standing during sections and occasional lifting of instructional materials or equipment, typically not exceeding 25 pounds.
- All other placements are primarily sedentary, with standard computer and desk work during grading and office hours.
