Position: Machinist I

Job Description

JOB OVERVIEW: Operate manual lathe/milling machines or perform one or more machine functions on metal or plastic work pieces. Perform complete and independent set‑up of various manual machine tools and carry out primary operations.

General Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of experience operating a manual mill and manual lathe
  • Ability to read shop drawings and instructions; use and interpret measuring tools accurately
  • Basic math calculation skills
  • Capability to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Primary Job Tasks
  • Know all equipment in area of responsibility and use equipment effectively
  • Observe machine gauges and use precision instruments and gauges to detect defects or deviations from standards; make adjustments as necessary
  • Work from prints, sketches, oral and written instructions to determine operation sequence, dimensions, tolerances, tools and methods for aligning and holding work
  • Maintain proper identification of machined parts as required
  • Perform required preventive maintenance and understand tag‑out/lock‑out processes
  • Work in a fast‑paced environment to keep up with production demands
  • Demonstrate safety practices at all times
  • Maintain run time and production records
  • Assist in the performance of other duties as needed to meet department objectives
Quality

Use the company’s ISO Quality System documentation to guide daily quality activities. Do not release products until all quality checks have been passed. Immediately report quality issues to the supervisor or quality manager.

Safety
  • Working safely is a condition of employment
  • Follow all environmental rules and procedures, handling materials to minimize environmental impact
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment
  • Review and know all Job Hazard Analyses for proper job sequence and hazards associated with the assigned jobs
  • Review and know all Safety Data Sheets for the assigned jobs
  • Maintain all work areas to 5S standards
  • Perform pre‑operation safety inspection and hazard analysis
Physical/Environmental Demands

Daily performance includes activities such as balancing, climbing, fingering, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, standing, stooping, walking and sitting. Must work in hot and cold environments typical of a prefabricated building without climate control. The operator is exposed to heat, cold, dust and fumes.
