The RN Vascular Access Specialist (IV Nurse) has skill in inserting IVs and is able to function autonomously within the Acute inpatient and outpatient care settings to guide the management of vascular access devices in complex patient, optimizing comfort and patient outcome while reducing risk for complications of care. The Vascular Access Specialist demonstrates the ability to communicate with care providers across the care continuum to support patient evaluation, access selection and insertion as approved, early removal and supports continual development of the IV access program.
Education
Associate Degree or 2 years of college coursework
Experience
Two years of related experience. Requires working knowledge of specialized practices, equipment, and procedures.
Licenses & Certifications
* Georgia Licensed Practical Nurse or Multistate Nursing License
* Healthcare Provider (CPR) or 90 days of hire
Qualifications
* Meets appropriate RN level requirement according to clinical ladder policy.
* Previous experience in IV therapy (includes starting IVs, assessing and maintaining sites and administering IV meds and infusions)
* BLS must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Area of Responsibilities
* Assess patient in need of vascular access and guide device selection based upon intended use, patient condition and risk factors and develop a plan for vascular access that will optimize the patient's outcome while reducing risk for complication.
* Meets appropriate RN level requirements according to clinical ladder policy.
* Routinely inserts IVs, PICC, midline catheters and select other approved vascular access devices in accordance with standards for Infection Prevention, current practice guidelines and institutional Policies and Procedures.
* Serves as a clinical resource for ongoing assessment and management of complex vascular access such as PICC lines, Triple Lumen Central Catheters, Midlines and other specialized vascular access devices. Supports concurrent data collection and analysis to ensure continually improving practice patterns associated with central access and care. Maintains current practice knowledge related to insertion and management of devices and educates staff.
* Supports the management of wound care within the institution through assessment, education and implementation of appropriate care protocols.
* Documents assessment of patient's IV access needs.
* Maintain current practice knowledge to support development of Policies and Procedures associated with insertion and management of care related to Vascular Access and education of staff.
* Supports concurrent data collection and analysis to ensure continually improving practice patterns associated with central access and care.
* Will serve on IV PICC team and assess patient in need of vascular access and guide device selection based upon intended use, patient condition and risk factors and develop a plan for vascular access that will optimize the patient's outcome while reducing risk for complication.
Compliance Statement
Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.
