Primary
Purpose:
To create and maintain a safe and stimulating environment for children (infants thru preschool), manage the assigned classroom, and provide information to parents regarding child development.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
* High school diploma or GED
* Bachelor's degree (preferred)
* CDA credential (preferred)
* 18 years of age or older
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
* Ability to complete 24 clock hours of professional development annually; CPR, First Aid training bi-annually
* Understands developmentally appropriate practices for the age of children in care
* Demonstrates sound judgment when planning for children's safety and health
* Responds to and interacts with children in their play environments and at the child's eye level
* Shows insight into child and adult behavior: accepts and respects differences in children and parents; understands and shows respect for confidentiality of children, parents and other staff; exhibits flexibility and sense of humor
* Communicates effectively and clearly with parents, staff and administrators, in both verbal and written form; presents a good model of language usage, both verbal and written
* Utilizes time well; is organized
Preferred Experience
* 2-3 years successful classroom experience in a licensed childcare center (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Tasks:
* Maintain the teaching and care giving standards established by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services; maintain current CPR and First Aid certificates.
* Direct the day-to-day functioning of the classroom: provide positive guidance to help children develop the ability to be self-disciplined; supervise children and maintain a developmentally appropriate environment for the children at all times; observe and monitor children both indoors and outdoors, assuring health and safety; ensure that each child receives individual attention.
* Work with the Child Development Academy Director to develop curriculum and daily lesson plans that are based on an assessment of each child's development and the goals of the Child Development Academy.
* Develop a Portfolio System as the primary means of gathering and organizing developmental data on child's growth. Plan and implement regular staff meetings with assistant teacher to discuss and plan for the children; work as a member of a team to ensure continuity of curriculum and high standards of quality in all classrooms in the center; assist the Child Development Academy Director with planning and implementing parent programs;
assist in other projects as assigned by the Director; in the absence of the Director, be willing to assume some of the responsibilities of the Child Development Academy Director.
* Maintain cooperative and productive relationships with other center staff; provide supervision, encouragement, and guidance for student workers, substitute teachers, volunteers and others in the program.
* Assume responsibility for the arrangement, tidiness, and organization of the classroom. Designate specific housekeeping tasks to aides and/or student workers to maintain order in the classroom; observe for and correct/report any hazardous conditions of the building, grounds, or equipment.
* Develop a friendly relationship and open communication with each child and his/her parents; communicate regularly with parents through daily greetings and written comments on children's daily charts (infant and toddler rooms). Conduct annual parent conferences and maintain appropriate notes in each child's file.
* Safely lift and carry infants to/from changing table; change an infant's diaper, administer medication and/or attend to infants' needs while assuring the child's safety and security at the changing table; change crib bedding and perform regular classroom housekeeping tasks such as picking up toys, restocking supplies for individual children (diapers, wipes, etc.) and sweeping floors after meals; handle multiple tasks and individual needs of 4 infants at once;
perform emergency evacuation procedures with ease, including lifting/loading 3-4 infants into a crib with wheels and rolling the crib outdoors to safety area.
* Must be able to tolerate the typical sounds of the infant room, i.e. babies crying, laughter, and active play.
* Assume responsibility by following the policy and procedures along with the operational procedures of the Child Development Academy listed in the staff handbook.
