The Medical Resident provides supervised patient care within a critical care hospital environment as part of an accredited residency training program. The resident participates in clinical decision making, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning while developing the competencies required for independent medical practice. This role supports multidisciplinary teams, contributes to quality improvement initiatives, and delivers high‑quality, compassionate care to a diverse patient population.
Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all‑inclusive.
Clinical Responsibilities- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including history, physical examination, and diagnostic interpretation.
- Develop differential diagnoses and evidence‑based treatment plans under attending supervision.
- Manage acutely and critically ill patients in ICU, step‑down, and inpatient units.
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds with attending physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health staff.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging, and other diagnostics.
- Perform procedures appropriate to training level (e.g., IV access, arterial lines, central lines, intubation, thoracentesis, paracentesis) under supervision.
- Respond to rapid response and code events as part of the hospital’s emergency response team.
- Document all patient encounters in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate logs of procedures, duty hours, and educational activities.
- Adhere to hospital policies, ACGME requirements, and patient safety protocols.
- Communicate effectively with attending physicians, nursing staff, specialists, and ancillary departments.
- Participate in care coordination meetings, handoffs, and interdisciplinary conferences.
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Attend required didactics, grand rounds, simulation training, and specialty‑specific educational sessions.
- Engage in self‑directed learning to enhance clinical knowledge and skills.
- Participate in scholarly activities, including case presentations, research, or quality improvement projects.
- Follow infection control standards and patient safety protocols.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences and quality review initiatives.
- Report safety concerns, near misses, and adverse events per hospital policy.
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
- Eligibility for a Texas medical license or training permit.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification (or obtained within program requirements).
- Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 or COMLEX equivalents.
- Completion of required clinical rotations during medical school.
- Prior experience in critical care, emergency medicine, or inpatient settings preferred but not required.
- Strong clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to manage high‑acuity patients in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to professionalism, ethics, and continuous learning.
- Proficiency with electronic health records.
