Job Description

General summary

A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a licensed professional responsible for providing medically prescribed speech therapy services to patients. SLPs evaluate and treat swallowing disorders, speech, and language problems resulting from strokes, head injuries, respiratory issues, and other medical complications. They work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Reporting relationships

Reports to the Manager of Rehabilitation Services

Primary job functions

  • Evaluate patients upon referral to determine problems and goals in cooperation with physicians.
  • Collaborate with and support the care plan as determined by the physician and healthcare team. Provide treatments accordingly. Re-evaluate patients periodically and adjust plans as needed. Coordinate and assist with care as indicated.
  • Interpret and communicate evaluation findings and treatment plans to patients, families, and team members.
  • Supervise Rehabilitation Aides and students involved in patient care.
  • Evaluate and treat cognitive-communication disorders, including problems with organizing thoughts, attention, memory, planning, and problem-solving.
  • Evaluate and treat feeding and swallowing difficulties following illness, surgery, stroke, or injury.
  • Maintain patient records reflecting evaluations, treatments, physician updates, care plans, discharge summaries, telephone orders, and billing.
  • Apply clinical knowledge and develop skills necessary for treating pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric populations.
  • Travel between facilities or treatment locations as necessary.
  • Perform tasks within the scope of education, knowledge, and organizational policies, adhering to local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, meetings, and in-services as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
