Job Summary

Working under the direct supervision of the Biomedical Engineering Department Manager, the Biomed Sterilization Specialist provides expert-level support in the inspection, repair, maintenance, calibration, testing, performance verification of sterile processing and surgical support equipment throughout the hospital and affiliated clinics. This position serves as the primary technical resource for sterilization and disinfection systems while also supporting general biomedical engineering operations during periods of reduced sterilization equipment workload.

All work is performed in accordance with departmental policies, CRMC standards, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements, including The Joint Commission, AAMI, OSHA, CDC, and NFPA guidelines. The Specialist collaborates closely with Sterile Processing, Surgical Services, Infection Prevention, Facilities Management, vendors, and fellow Biomedical Engineering team members to ensure safe and reliable operation of sterilization equipment and associated systems.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all-inclusive.

Primary Sterilization Equipment Responsibilities

Repairs, installs, maintains, calibrates, inspects, and troubleshoots complex sterile processing and surgical support equipment, including but not limited to:

  • Boiler-fed sterilization support systems
  • Surgical equipment tracking and monitoring systems

Serves as the primary technical expert for sterilization and disinfection systems across the hospital and affiliated outpatient and ancillary clinics.

Performs preventive maintenance, operational verification, and safety inspections of sterilization equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements.

Evaluates sterilization system performance and operational reliability, recommending corrective actions and process improvements as needed.

Assists with equipment acceptance testing, installation oversight, and commissioning of new sterilization and decontamination systems.

Coordinates and assists with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and third-party service providers for sterilization-related repairs and service activities.

Supports Sterile Processing, Surgical Services, and Infection Prevention departments during inspections, surveys, and accreditation activities.

Provides technical guidance and instruction to Sterile Processing and clinical staff regarding equipment operation, testing, and basic troubleshooting.

Monitors sterilization equipment trends and recurring failures and recommends corrective actions to improve reliability and minimize downtime.

Biomedical Engineering Support Responsibilities

During periods of reduced sterilization equipment workload, general biomedical equipment support, including preventive maintenance, inspections, and corrective repairs on non-sterilization medical equipment.

Assists other Biomedical Engineering team members with troubleshooting, repairs, special projects, and emergency service needs.

Assigns routine repairs, inspections, and installations to team members and observes performance as directed.

Acts as a technical resource and mentor to junior technicians.

General Duties

Prioritizes service calls and unscheduled maintenance to ensure response times meet departmental and clinical requirements.

Reviews preventive maintenance activities and recommends improvements to departmental processes.

Maintains accurate and up-to-date equipment inventory.

Utilizes the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document service events, inspections, testing, repairs, and failures in support of regulatory compliance.

Maintains complete and accurate documentation of all work performed.

Recommends new equipment, tools, test devices, and service procedures.

Maintains professional growth and technical expertise through seminars, conferences, training, and continuing education.

Understands and complies with The Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory standards.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
