Medical Laboratory Technologist

Hourly rate: Starting at $32/hour

Working hours: 12 hour shifts

Purpose/

Position Summary:

The technologist is responsible to the Director, Administrator and the Lab Manager. Under the direction of the manager, the technologist performs laboratory procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment, with ingenuity and initiative. Assumes responsibility for designated areas or procedures as required.

Job Relationships:
  • Reports to Laboratory Manager
  • Inter-relationships with:
    All staff, peers, medical staff, administration and department supervisors.
  • Interaction with patients, visitors, families, surveyors and regulatory agencies is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs venipuncture collections on pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Collects and labels the appropriate samples.
  • Reviews and orders the tests on the physician requisition in the hospital LIS.
  • Temp registers patients as needed.
  • Performs appropriate tests efficiently and accurately, reports correctly through the LIS, and distributes the results to the designated medical personnel.
  • Orders and ships specimens to reference laboratories. Completes results through LIS, and distributes the reports.
  • Maintains adequate records as directed.
  • Supports and maintains adequate quality control procedures.
  • Performs routine maintenance. Investigates and attempts to resolve technical problems.
  • Performs competency testing as required by laboratory policy. This will include wet, written and survey testing.
  • Rotates within the department and by shift as required.
  • May be required to assist in the development of techniques and technical factors related to new and current procedures.
  • Secures and returns supplies as needed.
  • In the absence of the manager, may be designated as acting manager.
  • Adheres to Compliance, Safety and HIPAA policies of the facility.
  • Has access to the “most sensitive” identifiable patient information.
Requirements

Education/training: Associates in Applied Science, at minimum

Meet CLIA requirements 2-6

Experience: Prior clinical experience preferred

Computer

Skills:

Intermediate computer skills required
