Minimum Requirements- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current RN licensure in good standing issued by the Board of Nurse Examiners of the State of Texas to practice professional nursing.
- Minimum of one (1) year ICU experience.
- Cognitive skills as related to the position.
- Current and active CPR certification.

The ICU (Intensive Care Unit) RN (also known as Critical Care Nurse) has a complex and challenging nurse specialty to which many registered nurses (RNs) aspire. The ICU RN will use their advanced skills to care for patients who are critically ill and at high risk for life-threatening health problems. Critical care nurses may also care for pre- and post-operative patients.
In addition, some serve as case managers and policy makers, while others perform administrative duties.
- Provides immediate and intensive nursing care when a patient suffers a heart attack, stroke, shock, severe trauma, respiratory distress, or other severe medical issue.
- Provides timely complex assessments and treatment vital to patients with a critical care need.
- Assesses a patient’s condition and planning and implementing patient care plans.
- Treats wounds and providing advanced life support.
- Assists physicians in performing procedures.
- Observes and records patient vital signs.
- Ensures that ventilators, monitors and other types of medical equipment function properly.
- Administers intravenous fluids and medications.
- Orders diagnostic tests.
- Collaborates with fellow members of the critical care team.
- Responses to life-saving situations, using nursing standards and protocols for treatment.
- Provides care for pre- and post-operative patients as needed or requested.
- Acts as patient advocate.
- Provides education and support to patient families.
- All other duties as assigned.
