At Houston Methodist, the Staff Registered Nurse (RN) position is responsible for functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The Staff RN provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, performs clinical triage, patient education, and maintains medical records. The Staff RN delivers direct patient care efficiently, and may care for patients with varied and complex needs.
The role communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes during and after care. The Staff RN demonstrates clinical competence by using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and protect patient rights.
The RN uses leadership and clinical judgment to coordinate patient care and direct/delegate activities of the patient care team, including preceptor responsibilities and contributing to initiatives with management.

Qualifications Education- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
- One year of nursing experience in a healthcare environment
- RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing; PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency)
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially regarding safety or security
- Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers with a customer service focus and positive language principles
- Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills; can prioritize multiple tasks and role components
- Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, patients, and families
- Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook
- Uses therapeutic communication, which includes active listening and teaching, to establish a relationship with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care.
- Contributes to teamwork by awareness of patient flow, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for assistance. Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment. Seeks guidance from and offers guidance to the interprofessional health care team, when appropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes.
- Provides staff education specific to patient populations and department processes, coaches and mentors other staff and students. May include preceptorship. Uses peer‑to‑peer accountability toward improvement of department score for employee engagement.
- Follows patient and family‑centered care standards, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and documents/maintains medical records.
