Pay Grade: IS 3 without CNA or CMA certification; IS 4 with CAN or CMA certification; 187 Days
Primary PurposeAssist the school nurse (RN) by assuming routine record‑keeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings at campus level. Work under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse.
Qualifications Education/Certification:High school diploma or GED;
American Heart First Aid or CPR certification; CNA or CMA certification.
Skills:
- Proficient in computer skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Previous successful experience working with children in private schools, licensed day‑care centers, camps or as acceptable to the employer. TEAMS experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties Health Services- Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illnesses according to a detailed protocol established by the school nurse (RN) or medical advisor.
- Administer medication to students in compliance with board‑policy procedures and maintain an accurate log of medications dispensed.
- Assist with health procedures and screening programs as delegated and supervised by the school nurse.
- Assist in maintaining personal hygiene of students.
- Contact parents of students who need to be picked up from school according to established protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
- Contact EMS according to established protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
- Escort students to and from the health room and assist students with disabilities as necessary.
- Provide simple nursing and first aid care and give emergency care within the framework of American First Aid training and district health‑services policies.
- Keep the school nurse informed of students’ status and any unusual events affecting students.
- Maintain absentee status records for students excused or readmitted due to health reasons, especially regarding communicable‑disease control.
- Use universal precautions when cleaning body spills and providing wound care.
- Keep the health clinic clean and sanitary.
- Assist the school nurse in record keeping as directed.
- Answer clinic telephone, type health reports, and perform other clerical duties as requested by the school nurse or principal.
- Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
- Prepare and arrange bulletin boards, displays, models, etc.
- Send out routine notices to parents.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents, including accurate, updated health records on all students.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and records using a personal computer or typewriter.
- Make appointments for and maintain the schedule of the school nurse (RN).
- Maintain a daily log of health‑office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable‑disease data, and referrals to the school nurse (RN).
- Maintain confidentiality of all information.
- Participate in in‑service training programs.
- Refer all inquiries by other school personnel concerning students to the school nurse and will not diagnose, prescribe, or give any medical advice, nor release any information about students’ health.
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
- Comply with federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the health‑services area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including AED; special‑needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals.
Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension.
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint or assisting non‑ambulatory students.
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases.
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
