Primary PurposePerform major and minor mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., G.E.D.)
- Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class
B) with P and S endorsements - Knowledge of school bus/automotive mechanical components
- Associate Degree in Auto Repair and/or a minimum of four (4) ASE Automotive Certifications (Automotive A1-A-8 or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck T1-T6, or School Bus S1-S7) or obtain ASE certifications within 18 months of employment, or TASBT Texas Association of School Bus Technicians equivalent
- Required to maintain ASE certifications or TASBT certifications
- Possess and maintain Texas School Bus Driver certification
- Airbrake Certified
- Acceptable communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Diagnose and troubleshoot and effect repairs for all district vehicles, including removal and replacement of engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, diagnose transmissions, etc.
- Knowledge of Service Maxx, Diamond Logic builder, Cummins In-site, Mercedes, Detroit, Alison doc programs
- After treatment systems including EGR valves, EGR coolers, SCR, DPF, DOC, and injector diagnostics
- Turbo charger tests: cylinder cutout test, leak-down test, high-pressure pump test, ICP & IPR
- Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision
- Operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair
- Lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
- Pass required bus driver safety training
- Operate a school bus
- Willingness to progress to mechanical level with training
- Minimum five (5) years auto/truck maintenance and repair experience
- Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule (rotate and balance tires, change oil and filters, lubricate vehicle parts, inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps, and maintain all fluid levels)
- Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance
- Diagnose mechanical problems of vehicles
- Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures
- Promote high standards of safety and acceptable housekeeping methods in all working areas
- Perform general mechanics functions and recognition and repair of all safety equipment
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately
- Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and services
- Use time wisely to ensure productivity and efficiency

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental FactorsTools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; engine hoist; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.
Posture: Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 lbs and over) daily.
