Overview

The Nevada Controller's Office is hiring for an Accountant III in Carson City, NV. Accountants in this series perform the highest level of financial reporting. Incumbents work in the State Controller's Office and produce the State's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), audited by an independent public accounting firm, essential for obtaining bond ratings, and required for the Single Audit Report; implement Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) pronouncements;

assist agencies with accounting issues and document processing; approve agency documents and work programs; provide support to agencies on the accounting system; review underlying accounting records for compliance with GAAP/GASB/federal regulations and reporting requirements, Accounting Policies and Procedures, and NRS. Incumbents will need to possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The successful candidate will be self‑motivated, able to work within established deadlines, maintain a good working relationship within a team environment, prepare thorough and accurate financial reporting, apply critical thinking skills by researching, analyzing, and interpreting state and federal regulations, demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and maintain a high standard of professional integrity and confidentiality. The incumbent must make recommendations regarding internal controls and ensure that fiscal policies and procedures are followed.

The incumbent may perform other related duties as required to meet ongoing needs.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP and GASB standards, including balance sheets, statements of revenue, expenditures/expenses, and changes in fund equity/balances. Combine statements by fund type, account group, and discrete component units.
  • Prepare various financial reports for federal, private grant, or national repository purposes and ad hoc reports for external auditors, legislative bodies, and the public.
  • Establish and maintain accounting systems and procedures that provide necessary documentation and audit trails for fiscal transactions, classification of expenditures, and current fund balances.
  • Prepare and analyze working trial balances, identify and correct errors, and make journal entries to produce reliable balance sheets and statements of revenues, expenditures/expenses, and changes in fund equity/balances.
  • Prepare balance sheets, income statements, and changes‑in‑fund‑balance statements from working trial balances.
  • Use internal and external data to prepare notes to financial statements with supporting work papers, tying all amounts to the basic statements.
  • Establish internal accounting procedures for preparing financial statements and managing workflow to ensure compliance with governmental accounting statutes, regulations, policies, and principles.
  • Provide overall support to agencies and divisions regarding accounting problems, management information systems, advice, consultation, direction, and training. Manage agency accounting functions by developing work plans, assigning work, establishing performance standards, and evaluating performance.
  • Analyze fiscal data, identify and correct errors, reconcile trust accounts, general ledger accounts, bank statements, sub‑ledger accounts, and controller’s reports.
  • Schedule and coordinate audits with independent auditors; prepare supporting work papers; assist auditors in periodic audits; review audit reports and summarize findings and recommendations; discuss findings with agency management and implement recommendations.
  • Determine if leases are capital or operating and prepare amortization schedules.
  • Review agency fixed‑asset listings; ensure year‑to‑year additions and disposals are properly reported; reconcile purchases to the accounting system and run depreciation schedules.
