Nevada State Senate Temporary Positions

The Nevada State Senate is seeking qualified candidates to work in the upcoming 2027 Legislative Session. Working a legislative session is an exciting and rewarding experience. It is an opportunity to take part in the legislative process, help run our state government, and earn valuable experience while working with Legislators and the public.

Committee Manager oversees a Senate standing committee's operation and workflow and supervises committee staff. Committee managers coordinate with the committee's chair, committee members, staff, lobbyists, and the public on agenda matters and schedules. The committee manager reviews the progress of committee minutes to ensure they are completed promptly, provides weekly updates to the director of administrative services, and conducts performance evaluations of committee staff.

In addition, the committee manager monitors committee meetings and Senate floor sessions and tracks bills that pertain to their committee.

Committee Secretary under the direction of the committee manager, administers and preserves the legislative record of Senate standing committee meetings and produces complete and accurately transcribed minutes. Responsibilities include interacting with the committee manager, committee chair, proofreaders, other departmental staff, Legislators, state agencies, legislative staff, lobbyists, the public, and others. In addition, the committee secretary posts committee agendas, prepares the committee room before meetings, calls the roll of committee members for attendance and voting, and reports final committee actions on bills and resolutions.

Senate Document Clerk verifies legislative actions on bills and resolutions and on the log outline of legislative video files to ensure accuracy, manages the Senate's unfinished business file, oversees the coordination of guest information in cooperation with the Senate's sergeant at arms, and works collaboratively with the front desk team each legislative day to review, verify, and edit Senate actions for the Senate daily journal and history.

The Senate document clerk also maintains the upcoming events calendar and posts nonpartisan social media updates on official Senate business.

Senate Recording Clerk produces a detailed daily agenda for Senate floor sessions and transcribes the Senators' remarks during floor sessions for the Senate journal. The Senate recording clerk creates the Senate log, which records all official actions taken on measures during each floor session. This log is used to verify the actions taken by the Senate during that legislative day. The Senate recording clerk preserves the legislative records of Senate floor sessions and works collaboratively with other Senate front desk staff to ensure the business of the Senate runs efficiently.

In addition, the Senate recording clerk serves as the coordinator for invocations provided by prayer givers during floor sessions.

Legislative Assistant oversees the operation and administration of a Senator's office. Responsibilities include interacting with Legislators, state agencies, the public, lobbyists, and others who visit the office, and providing administrative support to the Senator. Legislative assistants interact with Legislators and the public as the Senator's receptionist, handle communications, and follow the directives of the Senator in a manner that is courteous, professional, politically knowledgeable, and sensitive.

In addition, the legislative assistant plans the Senator's schedule according to session demands and responds to requests for information.

Proofreaders thoroughly review Senate committee minutes transcribed by committee secretaries for coherent content, comprehension, legislative intent, format, and spelling. Committee minutes are reviewed three times, each time by a different proofreader. Errors are noted for correction, and if necessary, proofreaders coach committee secretaries on writing formal English.

Senior Proofreader supervises proofreaders and assists with the training needs of Senate session staff. The senior proofreader performs performance evaluations on committee secretaries and their proofreader staff twice during a legislative session.

Assistant Sergeant at Arms staff is responsible for enforcing the Senate's rules and the directives of the Secretary of the Senate to ensure the legislative process in the Senate Chamber operates without interruption. Sergeant at arms staff work closely with the Secretary of the Senate, Senate front desk staff, and other Senate staff to ensure operational procedures and standards are followed and maintained.

Maintaining a strict level of confidentiality is essential when interacting with all Legislators, legislative staff, other departmental staff, lobbyists, the media, the public, and others.
