Position: Recreation Aide - Youth (Camp Carson)

Overview

During the Camp Carson Summer Day Camp program, we provide structured activities to our youth. Recreation Aides will assist Recreation Leads, help ensure children’s safety, and create a fun and safe environment. You will support Youth Programs policies and introduce and participate children in indoor and outdoor activities that include STEAM, Arts & Crafts, Core Programs, Team building, Swimming, and Field Trips.

The most important aspect of the Recreation Aide position is forming positive relationships with the children and helping them, whether it is playing an activity, assisting when they are injured or upset, or being someone the children can talk to. This position involves supervising children within a specific grade group from check-in to check-out.

This is a non-exempt, part-time position, not to exceed 1039 work hours in a fiscal year, in which the employee performs routine tasks in support of the Carson City Youth Programs.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Responsibilities
  • Organize, monitor, and participate in recreation and learning activities suitable for children between the ages of 5 and 13 years.
  • Prepare needed supplies for activities, set up prior to an activity, and clean up after the activity.
  • Carry out activity plans; treat participants appropriately and use positive monitoring techniques.
  • Ensure that the facility and equipment used are clean and in proper working condition.
  • Maintain daily attendance records for each participant; contact parents according to established protocols.
  • Maintain an organized and orderly work atmosphere.
  • React immediately, calmly, and effectively to situations and employ established techniques to resolve issues.
  • Perform cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by Recreation Aide Lead or Recreation Aide Supervisor.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner.
Education and Experience

Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age at date of hire, and have either paid or volunteer experience working with children between 5 and 13 years of age AND be willing to participate in water activities and be in water up to four (4) feet deep; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

This position, along with other childcare providers, is one of many groups of professionals required to report known or reasonable suspicion of abuse and/or neglect of children in their care and are considered mandated reporters as outlined in Nevada Revised Statutes.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Must obtain CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Campus Extension certificates (Mandated Reporting: Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect) within one (1) month of hire.
  • Nevada Act Early certificates within one (1) month of hire.
  • Pool Pact certificates within one (1) month of hire.
  • Pro Solutions certificates within one (1) month of hire.

Continued employment is contingent upon acquiring and maintaining these certifications.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Safe work practices.
  • Specific area of employment (working with children/basketball/volleyball, etc.).

Ability to:

  • Assist in organizing and implementing activities for the program participants.
  • React immediately, calmly, and effectively to situations and employ established techniques to resolve issues.
  • Enforce policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with both children and adults.
  • Maintain current certifications.
  • Drive a City vehicle if 18 years of age or older.
Physical Demands and Working Environment

In addition to the minimum requirements and knowledge, skills and abilities listed for the position, the following are required: sufficient mobility, strength, and endurance to maintain the facility and effectively monitor and control participants in recreational activities. Ability to use standard office equipment, read printed materials, and hear and speak to communicate. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Must be mobile, able to sit, stoop, and climb.
