Job Summary
The Nevada State Library, Archives & Public Records is seeking a Reference Librian in the Carson City area to provide professional reference services, support public access to collections, and contribute to the library’s online and digital initiatives. Working as part of the Access Services team and reporting to the Access Services Manager, this position serves as the library’s primary professional reference lead, providing advanced research assistance using NSLAPR collections, including government documents, archival materials, digital resources, maps, and other specialized materials.
Responsibilities include service desk coverage, assisting patrons with complex inquiries, and guiding users in effective search strategies, resource evaluation and discovery tools. The librarian also coordinates the library’s public‑facing web presence, maintains Access Services webpages, guides staff on website onboarding, ensures usability and accessibility, and supports digital access to collections by maintaining exhibits and monitoring content for accessibility, broken links and accurate display.
The role collaborates closely with Technical Services staff, participates in cross‑unit coordination, communicates effectively with colleagues regarding workflow needs, project status and contributes to shared initiatives that strengthen access and the overall user experience.
Essential Qualifications- Master's degree in an American Library Association accredited program and at least one year of professional library experience which includes a combination of at least three of the following: original cataloging/metadata, reference, e‑resources, social media, government publications and/or collection development.
- Bachelor's degree with 21 semester credits in library studies and two years of professional library experience.
- Associate's degree with 21 semester credits in library studies and four years of professional library experience, three of which at the professional level.
- High school graduate with 21 semester credits in library studies and seven years of library experience, four of which at the professional level.
- One year of experience as a Librarian I in Nevada State service that included 21 semester credits in library studies.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience that includes 21 semester credits in library studies.
Working knowledge of professional library principles, methods, and materials; professional ethics, copyright and intellectual freedom issues; collection development principles and practices; legal and regulatory environments of libraries; appropriate computer hardware and software applications; cataloging rules and formats; state and national inter‑library loan systems.
Ability to establish cooperative working relationships within and outside the library; read and critically evaluate instructional materials; research, plan and implement new programs and services; develop classification schemes; apply evaluation criteria to select appropriate research sources; train and supervise staff; prioritize work and delegate assignments; market and promote library services.
