Job Description
The Academic Advising & Access Department is recruiting for a student employee(s) to serve as a Peer Mentor. This position involves serving as the first point of contact for students and visitors, offering administrative assistance, and supporting various outreach and enrollment efforts. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, excellent customer service, and a strong interest in helping others navigate college resources and procedures.
The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential. Candidates must be eligible for student employment, taking at least six credits, and preferably have completed at least one semester of college.
- Greet and assist students and visitors at the front desk, providing guidance with appointments, general inquiries, and admissions/enrollment support
- Assist new students on processes including admission, other enrollment steps, registration through myWNC, and available campus resources
- Manage communication channels such as phone calls, messages, online website chat, and reminder/outreach calls to students
- Support department operations by updating spreadsheets for tracking projects, participating in orientations and other outreach events
- Complete training and assignments as needed, while maintaining confidentiality and delivering professional, student-centered service
- Fluency in English and Spanish is desirable
- Knowledgeable with Microsoft software
- Fall & Spring Semester Eligibility:
Enrollment in at least 6 credits each regular semester; in a degree‑seeking program; meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements: 67% completion rate in the last enrolled semester, 67% cumulative completion rate, 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale; have not exceeded the maximum number of credits allowed (90) or received two degrees OR be on an approved appeal and on probation with an Academic Plan;
and be authorized to work in the United States. - Summer Eligibility:
Enrolled in at least 6 summer credits; or successfully completed the spring semester and enrolled in the required 6 credits for the fall semester (summer enrollment in this case is not required); and meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements listed previously; and be authorized to work in the United States. - Continued employment is contingent on maintaining eligibility. If a student’s eligibility changes, their role may be subject to termination and/or they may be temporarily required to remain off work.
Student Employee – Level 1: $15 an hour.
Schedule- Full‑Time Equivalency: 50% – 20 hours per week.
- Students may not work during scheduled course times.
- Students may not work more than 20 hours per week during academic periods in which they are enrolled (Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters).
- Students may not work more than 28 hours per week during break periods, in which they are not taking courses.
