Job Description

The Learning & Innovation Department is recruiting for student employee Academic Coaches to provide peer-to-peer academic support to Western Nevada College students. Academic Coaches assist students in understanding course content, developing effective study strategies, and building confidence in their academic abilities.

This position supports WNC’s Commitment to student success by offering in-person and/or virtual coaching in a supportive, student-centered environment. Academic coaches work closely with students across a variety of subjects, helping them strengthen skills an persist in their coursework. Coaches may work flexible hours, including some evenings.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one and small group academic coaching sessions
  • Assist students with course content, and study strategies
  • Support a welcoming and inclusive learning environment
  • Maintain accurate records of student visits and sessions
  • Participate in required trainings and staff meetings
Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • B or better grade in subject to be coached
Student Employment Eligibility Fall & Spring Semester Eligibility
  • Enrollment in at least 6 credits each regular semester; and
  • Be in a degree seeking program; and
  • Meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements:
  • 67% completion rate in the last enrolled semester
  • 67% cumulative completion rate
  • 2.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale
  • Have not exceeded the maximum number of credits allowed (90) or received two degrees
  • OR be on an approved appeal and on probation with an Academic Plan; and
  • Be authorized to work in the United States
Summer Eligibility

Students are eligible to work during the summer if they meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in at least 6 summer credits; or
  • Successfully have completed the spring semester and enrolled in the required 6 credits for the fall semester (summer enrollment in this case is not required); and
  • Meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements listed previously; and
  • Be authorized to work in the United States
Changes in Student Eligibility

Continued employment is contingent on maintaining eligibility. If a student’s eligibility changes their role may be subject to termination and/or they may be temporarily required to remain off work. If students’ eligibility is on hold pending the results of an appeal, students are required to remain off work until the appeal has been satisfactorily resolved.

Student Employee - Level 1 $ 12-$15 an hour

Schedule

Scheduled and available hours may vary and are subject to change based on organizational needs.

Full-Time Equivalency

50% - 20 Hours Per Week

  • Students may not work during scheduled course times
  • Students may not work more than 20 hours per week (Sun-Sat) during academic periods in which they are enrolled (Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters)
  • Students may not work more than 28 hours per week (Sun-Sat) during break periods, in which they are not taking courses (summer break, winter break, and spring break)
