Job Summary
The Department of Business and Industry’s Division of Industrial Relations is hiring a Safety Specialist in the Mine Safety and Training Section (MSATS) based in Carson City. The MSATS protects Nevada’s mining industry by reducing accidents and ensuring miners return home safely. The role involves inspections, accident investigations, training, and technical support for mines, mills, quarries, and other industrial sites. Up to 50% travel is required, and the position may call for evening or weekend work.
EssentialQualifications
Five years of technical, operational, or management experience in mines, mills, beneficiation plants, or smelters, including one year underground work.
Job Duties- Conduct safety and health inspections of surface and underground mines, mills, and quarries in accordance with NRS 512.170, covering ground control, fire prevention, air quality, ventilation, explosives handling, electrical safety, equipment safeguards, personal protection, material storage, safety programs, and hoisting.
- Perform industrial hygiene surveys, including air quality evaluations, noise dosimetry, ventilation surveys, hazardous materials handling, and material safety data sheet compliance.
- Measure noise, dust, metal, and toxic substances using routine sampling procedures; perform electrical ground resistivity tests; conduct ventilation surveys when internal combustion engines are used underground.
- Issue notices of violation and abatement orders; provide orders prohibiting entry or use of equipment when imminent danger exists.
- Develop and deliver federally required training to mine operators and workers on accident recognition, avoidance, and prevention, including new miner, refresher, first aid, mine rescue, and instruct‑the‑instructor courses.
- Investigate mine accidents, inspect disaster potentials (fires, explosions, inundations, entrapments, machinery accidents), interview witnesses, prepare reports, recommend prevention procedures, and testify at federal penalty hearings or civil court proceedings.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Travel up to 50% statewide and work evenings or weekends as needed.
- Working knowledge of metal and non‑metal surface and underground mining processes, equipment, machinery, and associated safety issues; understanding of state and federal health and safety standards.
- Ability to consult with mine operators, workers, and representatives to promote safe practices.
- Physical endurance to conduct inspections over uneven terrain, climb ladders and stairs, and work underground in confined, wet, dusty, or poorly illuminated environments.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to give presentations and produce accurate, logical technical reports.
- Capability to establish and maintain effective relationships with regulated industry stakeholders.
