9-1-1 Dispatcher
Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of complex duties involved in the receipt and processing of emergency 9-1-1 and non‑emergency calls; relays information between 9-1-1 callers and emergency personnel; dispatches emergency personnel and tracks activity to secure the safety of responders and the facts of the situation.
Important Job Information- Connects the public to law enforcement and fire/rescue services.
- Assists callers who are victims, survivors, and witnesses of all types of emergency situations while obtaining and entering essential information into a computer.
- Remains calm, focused, organized, and able to recall information instantly.
- Works varied shifts including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education and ExperienceEquivalent to High School Diploma or GED; and one (1) year of public safety or customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations- Valid Driver’s License
- Dispatch training set forth in Nevada Administrative Code Chapter 289 within 12 months of employment
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification within 12 months of employment
- NCIC/NCJIS certification within 12 months of employment
- CPR certification within 12 months of employment
- Geographic features and directional information
- Call screening techniques and phone etiquette
- Standard office practices and procedures, including records management
- Communicating effectively in oral and written forms
- Multitasking skills
- Exercise good judgment and make sound and timely decisions in emergency and non‑emergency situations
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate clearly and concisely in writing during emergency and non‑emergency situations
- Recall, summarize, prioritize, and categorize information
- Effectively listen to, communicate with, and elicit information from upset, emotional, mentally disturbed, irate or threatening individuals, including those under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Requires standard office equipment use; stamina to sit for extended periods; strength to lift up to 20 pounds; vision to read printed materials; hearing and speech for communication; exposure to periods of intense stress.
Conditions of Employment- All new employees serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months; may be laid off during this period.
- Continued employment contingent upon maintaining all required licenses and certificates in active status without suspension or revocation.
- May be required to work non‑traditional schedules during emergencies.
- May be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment.
