Position Overview

This is a full‑time, FLSA non‑exempt position located in Carson City, Nevada. Under limited supervision, the incumbent will perform inspections of residential and non‑residential buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration, and repair to ensure compliance with applicable state and local regulations/codes and enforce building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and safety codes.

Salary Ranges

Employer‑Paid PERS: $26.9797 – $37.7717 hourly ($56,117.88 – $78,5654.24 annually)
Employee/Employer‑Paid PERS: $32.5480 – $45.5671 hourly ($67,699.84 – $94,779.62 annually)

Responsibilities
  • Inspect residential and non‑residential building construction, alterations, repairs and demolitions; ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Perform safety and structural evaluations of buildings following disasters and complaints.
  • Note deficiencies and deviations from plans; issue notices of code violations and/or confer with the Building Official on more serious problems.
  • Coordinate inspection activities with other City departments, public and private agencies.
  • Respond to requests for information, provide technical information to City staff as required, and provide assistance to the public.
  • Review plans and specifications of projects; interpret City codes, notices of violation, occupancy certificates and work stop orders.
  • Provide information and respond to inquiries from contractors, property owners, City staff, business owners and the general public regarding assigned inspections.
  • Perform code enforcement of the codes enforced by the Community and Economic Development Department.
  • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit’s service by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of inspections, actions taken and regulatory efforts; prepare written reports and correspondence and issue notices to correct code violations.
  • Perform public counter duties as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of construction technology, methods and materials; update code knowledge through regular training sessions.
  • Represent the City with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of college coursework in construction, pre‑engineering, or a related field; or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a recognized trade; and two (2) years of journey‑level experience in a trade; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid International Code Council (ICC) certification in Residential and/or Commercial Building Inspection (combination, electrical, plumbing or mechanical) highly desirable.
  • Occupational Health & Safety Training certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, codes and regulations related to building inspection; procedures for documenting inspections, correcting violations and carrying through on court procedures as required; concepts, materials and terminology related to building construction; applicable codes and regulations; computer applications related to the work; business and engineering mathematics; standard office practices and procedures; record‑keeping principles and practices; correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation;

    techniques for dealing with the public, in person and over the telephone.
  • Skill in interpreting and applying appropriate methods, practices, procedures, codes and regulations to building inspection; interpreting construction plans, specifications and related documents; contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities; organizing, prioritizing and coordinating work activities and meeting critical deadlines; performing residential and commercial inspections; documenting inspections and following through in code‑violation procedures; preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials;
