The Department of Public Safety is recruiting for a NCJIS Specialist Trainee in Carson City. The role is part of the Records, Communications and Compliance Division, NCJIS Compliance Unit, and supports the Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) and the Nevada Civil & Criminal Information System (NCCIS).
Responsibilities- Provide technical support for Nevada civil partners and internal customers, including account unlocks, system research, and troubleshooting NCCIS access and functionality.
- Assist users with system operations and guide them through system configurations and data entry updates.
- Use the Service Now ticket system to log, manage, and resolve incidents or requests, and track ticket status in Smartsheet.
- Respond to calls and emails promptly and professionally, including during weekends and holidays according to the work schedule.
- Document incidents and maintain accurate records in incident tracking systems.
- Support training activities by conducting training sessions for system users, preparing training aids, evaluating effectiveness, and ensuring proper record‑keeping.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and departmental standards, including confidentiality, security protocols, and relevant laws and regulations.
- Analyze and resolve system‑related issues or escalation to higher‑level teams.
- Conduct system audits of law enforcement, criminal justice and public safety agencies using NCJIS to ensure compliance with policies and laws.
- Develop and implement system policies, procedures, and publications to maintain compliance with federal and state requirements.
- Coordinate system access, upgrades, and enhancements for approved agencies, conduct user acceptance testing and document requirements.
- Investigate findings or reported cases of non‑compliance or misuse of confidential information and perform follow‑up reviews.
- Plan, develop, and conduct training programs for system users, including curriculum development, material preparation, and examinations.
- Respond to agency inquiries regarding system operations, policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
- Perform related duties as assigned and operate under close supervision at the trainee level, with progression to the next level upon meeting minimum qualifications and satisfactory performance.
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice, computer science, communications, business, or a closely related field; OR high school diploma or equivalent with 12 months of paraprofessional experience equivalent to Administrative Assistant III in Nevada State service, including support to professional staff, coordination of communications, or research.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities for interacting with civil partners, internal customers, allied agencies, and the public.
- High degree of integrity and professionalism to uphold confidentiality and ethical standards.
- Problem‑solving skills for troubleshooting and resolving system issues.
- Flexibility to work one weekend day per week and most state holidays, as required.
- Willingness to learn, adapt, and maintain technical knowledge in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience in a helpdesk or service desk environment.
- Familiarity with NCIC, NCJIS, or similar criminal justice systems.
- Prior experience troubleshooting technical systems or applications.
- Knowledge of Smartsheet for project or task tracking.
- Experience conducting training sessions for system users.
This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of the criminal justice system. Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, reliability, and continuous learning.
Working knowledge of research methods and techniques; ability to utilize computer and associated equipment, track and maintain program statistics in spreadsheets and databases, utilize presentation software, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, receive and respond to inquiries involving complex and sensitive issues, and interpret, apply, and explain complex laws and regulations.
