Salary & Benefits:

Salary Range: $28.89 to $37.37 (7 hours per day, 181 days per year) with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave. The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No.

311.1.

Education and Experience:

Minimum of AA Degree, Bachelor's degree preferred. A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in sign language for the deaf and hard of hearing; completion of college-level course work in auditory disabilities, sign language, interpreting, or a closely related field; or experience performing the services for the deaf and hard of hearing where signing is required.

Bilingual preferred.

The following credentials are required at the time of application:
Certification from the National Association of the Deaf (N.A.D.) or its successor organization as having a level of proficiency in providing interpreting services at Level 4 OR, have completed the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (E.I.P.A.) administered by the Boys Town National Research Hospital or its successor organization and received a rating of proficiency in providing interpreting services at Level 3 – 3.9 or higher.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Interpreters are not guaranteed a specific site. They may be assigned to locations that will best serve the educational needs of the students and the school district. Each position is contingent upon the number of students with these particular needs remaining enrolled in the school district.

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen test.

This is a replacement position.

General

Job Description:

Under supervision, works as part of the team to support deaf and hard of hearing students and other individuals in an educational environment; and to perform related work as required. Bilingual preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of sign language at the advanced level.

• Communication methods with interpreters and the deaf and hard of hearing through visual means; hearing disorders and their effects on behavior; basic subjects taught in an elementary and secondary school curriculum; understanding of interpreter assessment and skill development, accurate record keeping techniques.

• Ability to competently utilize expressive and receptive skills in ASL and PSE.

• Ability to translate from English to the mode of sign language preferred by the deaf.

• Ability to translate from the mode of sign language to the spoken word.

• Ability to test and evaluate applicants/employees for interpretation skill level.

• Ability to demonstrate a high level of problem solving.

• Ability to demonstrate mental and physical stamina commensurate with the position.

• Ability to interpret and apply oral and written instructions.

• Ability to learn and apply school rules, regulations, and procedures.
