Job Overview

This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with the Carson City District Attorney's Office. Under general supervision of the Supervising Legal Assistant, the office provides customary and/or confidential legal office support.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level in the Legal Assistant series. Incumbents perform a wide range of criminal, delinquency, dependency, and civil legal support duties. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of case files, compiling and disseminating evidence, reviewing pleadings and correspondence, and accurate calendaring.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Employer-Paid PERS: $24.53 – $34.34 hourly / $51,016 – $71,422 annually
  • Employee/Employer-Paid PERS: $29.59 – $41.42 hourly / $61,545 – $86,163 annually

Examples of Duties
  • Reviews, organizes, and disseminates a wide variety of legal documents including agreements, contracts, complaints, orders, reports, videos, discovery, etc.
  • Drafts pleadings, petitions, statements, subpoenas, briefs, correspondence, memoranda, audio transcriptions, and other legal documents.
  • Calendars and schedules court dates, meetings, and appointments for attorneys.
  • Attends court hearings and ensures accuracy of court docket.
  • Ensures timely and proper filing of pleadings, exhibits, and other legal materials with the appropriate court.
  • Reviews finished pleadings and memoranda for completeness, accuracy, format, and compliance with applicable court rules.
  • Communicates with staff from other agencies, businesses, law firms, and/or witnesses at attorney direction.
  • Maintains and updates case notes and files.
  • Prepares weekend court docket on a rotating assignment.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding cases in person and over the telephone.
  • Prepares presentation materials, exhibits, and binders for trial, arbitration, or other contested hearings.
  • Performs closing and auditing of case files.
Typical Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of clerical or administrative experience in a legal or court office; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • A valid driver’s license.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to use a variety of computer programs including case management, court calendaring, word processing, data entry, and standard report generation.
  • Ability to use basic arithmetic to calculate briefing deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use correct business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use legal office terminology, processes, procedures.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to format legal documents.
  • Skill and ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
