Position: Building Maintenance Worker - Hourly

Position Overview

This position is with the Carson City Public Works Department. This is a part‑time position, not to exceed 1,039 hours per fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties related to facility cleaning and maintenance.

This position is expected to work swing shift, with hours varying from 4:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., approximately 14–20 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • This position may require working non‑traditional shift hours, which may include early morning, afternoon, evening, late night, or swing shift.
  • Availability to work on call, evenings, and weekends is required.
  • Moves and arranges furniture and A/V equipment to set up rooms for meetings and special functions.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing of hard floors, under bleachers, facility restrooms, auditorium floors, seats, windows, fixtures, mirrors and carpets. Empties trash and stocks supplies, etc.
  • Operation of cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor machines, buffers and carpet extractors.
  • Removes litter and debris from facility walkways and grounds.
  • Supervision and securing of facility.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of work; drives City vehicles to work sites, transports materials and assists other staff as required.
  • Provides customer service.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with contractors, public and City staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
Education and Experience
  • Equivalent to a High School education or GED.
  • Professional cleaning experience is helpful.
  • Hospitality industry experience is helpful.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Safe work practices and regulations pertaining to the work.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to understand and apply ratios.
Skill in
  • Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools related to the work.
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Preparing basic records of work performed.
  • Performing general maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew, in various areas, depending on the function.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Ability to read and communicate with basic English skills.
Supervision Received and Exercised
  • Under General Supervision. Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

Demands & Working Environment
  • The employee is regularly required to stand; use hands, fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to continuously move throughout the facility.
  • The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavier loads with assistance.
  • This position frequently operates motorized equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust.
Working Environment
  • Public assembly/multipurpose environment; extensive public contact; exposure to computer screens; amplified speech and music; exposure to large crowds; may be exposed to theatrical atmospheric and lighting effects; may be exposed to balls and other sports related objects traveling quickly through the air; frequently exposed to motorized equipment operation and power tools.
