Minimum Qualifications

Under direction, is responsible for managerial fleet operations work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features

The employee in this class is responsible for managing the largest motor vehicle fleets, including determining equipment specifications, maintenance procedures, and vehicle use policies. This class differs from the Motor Vehicle Mgmt Assist Director, who assists in directing the largest fleets with an emphasis on operational aspects of fleet management.

Other Requirements
  • Through subordinate supervisory personnel, assigns, trains, supervises, and evaluates a relatively large staff of equipment mechanics, equipment mechanic supervisors, and support personnel.
  • Develop specifications for vehicles to be purchased; supervises the processing of requisitions for replacements or additions to the fleet; formulates age and mileage requirements for vehicle replacement; develops policies governing the use of state vehicles.
  • Approves vehicle assignments for each state-owned vehicle in compliance with existing policies.
  • Approves or disapproves regular series license plates for all departments and agencies; reviews license applications to ensure all criteria have been met.
  • Approves or disapproves state gasoline credit card requests for all departments and agencies.
  • Is responsible for all in‑house and contract maintenance and repairs of vehicles and facilities.
  • May appraise vehicles to determine value for surplus sale.
Job Overview

Education and Experience:

Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school and experience equivalent to substantial (five or more years of) increasingly responsible full‑time automotive maintenance, automotive parts procurement, or automotive inventory control work including, at least, three years of supervisory experience. Qualifying full‑time experience may be substituted for the required education, on a year‑for‑year basis.

    Maximum allowable days: 42 days. Leave earned in excess is transferred annually to the employee’s sick leave account.
