PURPOSEThe Welder supports PCC Carson City's aerospace casting operations by performing precision Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) repairs on aerospace investment castings. This role restores dimensional and structural integrity to castings through controlled weld repair in accordance with customer specifications, welding procedures, and quality standards. The Welder works with a wide range of alloys including nickel‑based superalloys, stainless steels, and other high‑performance aerospace materials.
Welder Levels 1‑3 represent increasing levels of certification, skill, and technical responsibility within PCC's weld repair program.
- Perform Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) repairs on aerospace castings in accordance with approved welding procedures and technique cards.
- Work from shop orders, specifications, weld maps, and written instructions to determine weld location, filler material, and repair requirements.
- Plan welding sequence including part preparation, preheating, weld application, and finishing operations.
- Repair casting defects including cracks, non‑fill, porosity, pits, slag holes, or other discontinuities.
- Apply weld build‑up where required to support machining operations or restore dimensional requirements.
- Select appropriate filler rod, electrode type, current settings, and other welding parameters based on alloy and repair requirements.
- Exercise care to achieve proper weld penetration and avoid defects such as undercut, porosity, or slag inclusion.
- Perform weld repairs while maintaining dimensional stability and metallurgical integrity of castings.
- Perform visual inspection of weld areas before and after welding operations.
- Inspect parts for casting defects including cracks, porosity, distortion, or non‑fill conditions.
- Use measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and fixtures to verify dimensional compliance.
- Ensure weld repairs conform to blueprint specifications and inspection requirements including penetrant and radiographic inspection where applicable.
- Operate electric and gas welding equipment and maintain proper welding equipment setup.
- Utilize fixturing and backup tooling to support weld repairs and maintain dimensional stability.
- Operate rote tooling or hand tools as required to smooth and finish weld repairs.
- Review weld maps and technique cards to verify repair requirements before welding begins.
- Access computer systems to log time, track work orders, and update production records.
- Maintain required documentation and records of welding repairs performed.
- Follow all plant and department safety procedures and maintain proper housekeeping practices.
- Safely operate welding equipment, lifting devices, and tools.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, defective materials, or unusual operating conditions.
- Train or assist less skilled personnel when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support plant production goals.
